    I did that too at a dept where I applied. In their recruiting office, they had 2 revolvers, both spray painted bright orange, with the cylinders plugged and the end of the barrels welded closed. It seemed pretty safe. At another, they just presented us a revolver after showing it was unloaded. A bit less safe, but the testing was on their range and we were instructed to keep the weapon downrange at all times.

    John, actually they do "trigger" test at the recruiting station. We did not have anyone fail in my section, but I think some were lost...

    TXinvest... Im pretty sure the firearms that are used for this test have been made "safe" by removing the firing pins. (not 100% sure though...that was over a year ago)
