First of Many Questions w/ the hope of a possible career change.

Hi all. I have been lurking around for several months. After much thought/ debate, I am about to begin the process of searching for a career in law enforcement. Quick background, 29 years old, married, 2nd generation Law Enforcement (1 who is retired federal law, and a sibling who is current.) As a youngin' (all be it, I think i still am???) I decided I didn't want to follow the family plan and pursue law enforcement. In which case, I definatelly have hits against me from my college days, but we will see where that leads. In any case, I have owned an insurance business for several years, and after a very difficult (financial) year, my wife and I have discussed a career change. Enough rambling... here's my first question.

On several of the "pre applications" I have seen, they ask for previous residence for the last 10 years. Would those residence also include apartments I stayed in while a college student, or places where I actually declared residency? Mt last 6 years after moving from the east coast are easy, it's those darn college years I'm not sure about, and I imagine it may be a bit difficult. Not impossible, but difficult.

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the ramblings.

Any place you lived for the last 10 years. You are always better putting more info than leaving something out.

I had to list the places I have lived for the last ten years as well. Lucky for me, it's been all easily verified since I've been a military member for 20 years. You'll need to be specific if you've moved around.

Hey txinvestigator1, I had hoped you might respond. I notice all your responses are blunt/succint(i tend to appreciate it more). I agree, better to provide too much than to omit, and I'm sure I'll have some of those questions are far as BI is concerned down the road.
So that being said, that I can recall, I had 3 different addresses while in college. However, I have not been able to find any documentation on any of the addresses whether old dorm or 2 apartments. Any suggestions on where one would look? I attempted to find an old L500 form that I had filled out when I first entered the insurance industry in 1999, but neither myself nor the company has a copy.
    Thanks.

Your college should have a housing department, that would most likely retain records. Document who you talk to and what you did.

If you cannot find out where you lived, then list everything you did.

    UPDATE: to my address questions

I have been able to account for 9 years with exact addresses. However, I have not been able to find the address from 94-95. I know the name of the street where it is located, I even have a general sequence of #'s from mapquest(ie 1201-1500...) Unfortunatelly I can't for the life of me remember the name of the apartments, and have no old billing records or leases.

Should I just list it as "1202-1500 AnyStreet" or should I continue the search? I don't want to "lazy" or incomplete with my information, but I'm really not sure how else to get the exact address. Thanks again.

At least put the street name. Do you still keep in touch with any of your old roomates who might remember or be able to find out?

Put as MUCH info as you can down , when you simply don't know something like an exact address or which month you moved in, just include that in your explanation. Not recalling the exact street address of an apt. that you lived in 9 years ago is not going to get your application thrown out.

Hi MD123. No room mate to speak of on the first apartment. The 2 years after that I did get the chance to live with 4 women.(that was interesting)

Thanks MCSAP. I'll enter the street name and leave it the rest for explanations.

MCSAP's advice is right on target. I was in a similar situation where I had moved around quite abit and could not remember the exact location. I just put down the street name, city and state and explained that I could not remember the exact address.

    Social Security Department.

If you worked during those years, they'll know your address. There may be a nominal charge for it.

like he said, at least document on a seperate sheet of paper your attempts to find your addresses. Remember in Law Enforcement, your responsibility includes basic investigations. If you cant investigate someone you know as well as yourself, how will you do that agency any good?

Go to one of the data mining companies and pay to have yourself run. They will have most of your former addresses.
