Help w/ Illinois State Police App.

The ISP offered a test on January 6th. I have been asked to complete the full background questionaire, due by January 19th.

One of the many questions is asking me to give the Merit Board all previous driver's license numbers. I had one in Indiana, and one in Ohio. I have no idea what these numbers are.

My licenses would have been valid prior to 1993 (that's when I moved to IL). The license bureaus have not been very helpful, and seem to keep saying that driving records are available for only the past 7 years at best.

Obviously I need the number ASAP, and I cannot seem to get much of a response from the other states?

Anyone have any ideas on getting those license numbers. Also, if they are asking me to list driving offenses, those would have occured more than 10 years ago....I have no idea when they happened.

    Any advice would help.

(P.S. I received a letter 2 weeks ago stating that the State of IL had no money in the budget, but that my information had been received by the Dec. 10th deadline. 2 days later I was asked to show up and take the fitness and suitability test, as well as fill out the questionaire by Jan. 19th. So I'm kind of pressed for time.)

    Thanks, in advance.

Sorry, but I can't help you on your question, but I would like to say good luck to you on your process! The ISP is an excellent agency and wish I could apply. I do not, however, have 5 years as an MP or a BA. The process for ISP can be very long, not to mention when there are budget problems. A family member who was in ISP, and later helped to run the academy, said it took guys he knew on the job 5 years to get on, but that was a long time ago.

I think you will be ok as long as you mention the state and time period you held the DL. They don't expect you to know everything they just want you to be up front with them. I guarantee they will check with law enforcement in those states anyway.

I have a buddy that is graduating from the ISP academy in two weeks. His process with ISP was short. He took the test in March 03 and was hired in July 03 but the class was delayed until August 03 due to budget issues. If ISP processes that quickly again you could be in the academy this year.

Do you have the same insurance company that you had when you lived in those states? If so, they may have your former DL numbers. If you go to the DMV in those states they can print out your driving history on the spot. Even if you're not currently licensed in those states I believe. Check the respective states websites.

    Good luck

    Thank you

I was told that the current application (that I took) was for fiscal year starting June 1st of this year, and that the budget would be approved and it's very likely that any accepted applicants could very well be in the academy shortly after June 1st, and so we should have any and all requested or necessary documentation available NOW, as the entry into the academy could happen very, very quickly. (ie, if your vision isn't X, you have to have written proof that you've worn contacts for 6 months, etc.)

I was as upfront as I could possibly be. I simply told them that none of the license bureaus could give me any information on my license numbers, or dates of tickets/accidents.

I listed (dates are my best guess) all moving violations, plus the accident I had at 16 or 17 years of age. I don't have that many violations, and it's been over 7 years since I had any sort of traffic related issue.

Being the moron I am, I just paid $12.00 to the Illinois DMV for my driving record, which consists of a blank sheet marked Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles. LOL!

Thanks for all the advice. I've done the best I could, I haven't hidden anything, so where we go from here is up to them.

    Best wishes to all!
