Anybody familiar with the APD lateral entry? I checked out the website's info but it doesn't mention pension or length of academy. I have heard they have an OT shortage due to poor city management, any info? What type of schedule does APD work?

I was looking into applying to ATL. as well, but I was unable to gather any relevant information such as overall benefits, especially pension. I don't think I will have the luxury of moving from department to department. It is being hard enough getting one to hire me now with the stupidity on my background.Originally Posted by dcpolice
You couldn't find it or they wouldn't give it? I emailed a list of questions to the recruiter the website links you to. All were questions the website didn't answer. I got an email back saying check the website. I have requested an application about 6 times. NOTHING. I've been told life in the Atlanta suburbs is very nice, very crime free, and very affordable. Otherwise, I would not even bother.
I couldn't find it. I think I'm going to have to take the drive from Orlando to Atlanta for the application.
About the burbs, it is true. I have a friend at school who is from Alpharetta. She says its a wonderful neighborhood. In fact, I just called her to ask her about it right now. She said "think of Stepford Wifes". I don't know if you've seen the movie. Of course, minus the robot stupidity. lol
Call my friend Clint, he lives there.Originally Posted by dcpolice

GeorgiaCarry.org is an influential civil rights organization committed to not resting until the State of Georgia ceases all infringements upon the people's natural right to keep and bear arms that is protected by both the constitutions of Georgia and the USA. It's members include prominent legislators, captains of industry, members of the armed forces, police officers, parents, academics, lawyers, and citizens from all walks of life.

You really have no idea what you are talking about. Check out Clayton, Henry, Fayette, Spalding and Butts counties. The cost of living, and the cost of housing are very reasonable.Originally Posted by ngcsubutterbar

With 5 years experience and a BA degree, I would start just short of 42k. Plus the website said to increase that by 5% in early January. I don't need to be next to the city either. 20-30 minutes out would be just fine. Anybody know how the $$$ matches up to that sort of commute.
In DC area to afford something decent you are looking at almost an hour drive. It keeps getting further out. People are living in PA and W. Virginia and commuting to DC.
If either of you work for APD I have got some questions.
What is the pension like (years & percent)?
If you work will specialized units seek you out?
How many years required to be detective?
What type of schedule?
How are benefits? (ie. family insurance)
How long is the lateral academy?

dcpolice, I know nothing about the APD particulars, I was just stating what I saw.

You could try policepay.net. However, I dont think they had much more than the nonexistent info on APDs web site. That does seem to be a rather counter intuitive way to get people to apply.
I live and work in the richest county in metro Atlanta along the 400 corridor.Originally Posted by ngcsubutterbar
It is pricy, but this place is the exception. And there are some deals to be had here if you look around.

I work for APD I'll give you some info.
1. I have no idea how the pension works, it is beyond my level of mental comprehension, I don't think half the dept knows either, it's all about to change anyway.
2. We have every specialized unit you can think of, we have one of the best SWAT teams in the south, RED DOG, CID units, etc... they look at your reports and your stats it's easy if you're a good officer.
3. 8 hours, 7A-3P, 3P-11P, 11P-7A with two consecutive off days
4. Benefits, we have three or four health insurance providers, vision, dental, differed compensation, AFLAC, etc...
5. Lateral academy is 8 - 10 weeks, I was in the Academy with a lateral class and they didn't seem to mind it, it's nothing like the basic mandate academy.
Overall APD is a good department to work for, especially for the experience you will see more down here in your first month than a lot of cops see in their entire careers. As far as the cost of living goes, it's easy to make it down here on a cops salary, plus we have tons of extra jobs you can work and as a lateral you don't have to be on probation. Good Luck
