Okay, one more question. Then I will refer to newer threads in the future, promise! I have appointments for 5 other exams/interviews which are out of state for me. Not all of them go about the hiring process in the same order, and I might get halfway through before filling out a background check form, or personal history statement, where any indication of prior drug use is a DQ. Would you recommend calling them now, and explaining my situation and finding out if I can still be eligible, or if exceptions are made? This might save me some time and expenses. Or would it be better to just go through the process, and maybe let them get to know me, and then make their decision?

Does it make sense to you to pay money to travel all over the earth to test for departments you may not be eligible for. I don't know what your current financial situation is like, but most in this economy don't have a ton of money to burn. If you have suspicions that something(s) in your background may disqualify you, the smart thing to do would be to make a call before dishing out money for an application what won't go anywhere.

From your post you seem to already know this, but what you don't realize is that taking a test or going into an interview won't make the department "know you" to any point where a disqualification would be overlooked.

Can I take this one step further and ask how the (new) wife's credit affects being disqualified? I am worried that my past is going to ruing my husbands dreams. We have onl been married for 3 months and I do not want to let him down.

It shouldn't. Although you combine a lot of things, you each maintain your own credit score. I didn't know that until I got my wife's and mine. I got to rub it in that my score is about 10 points higher than hers. I have no idea why.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine
