    NYS Corrections?

Does anybody know about the hiring process for NYS corrections? This link http://www.docs.state.ny.us/Jobs/CO_Exam.html tells about salary, benefits, etc. but I am curious to know about their BI, Poly, Physical requirements and how competitive it is to get hired.

Try NYPD instead. Better working conditions.

I'm working on NYPD and NYSP right now as well, corrections is just another way of keeping my Law Enforcement options open.

Let me clarify before peolpe freak.

Police: primary objective is to enforce laws and save human life

Corrections: primary objective is to provide a center for detainment. Obviously in doing such they are enforcing rules and providing a safe environment...but that comes automatically with the detainment. Yes....they have no guns and work among hardened criminals. But remember. The inmates, for the most part are searched, and have see through walls. It is also a controlled environment. There is only so far things can go. The name it itself implies they are there to "correct the individual." Not enforcement.

While I respect their position and what they do, and extend all professional courtesy, I do the same with others who make my job easier, such as doctors, judges, etc... But around here (NY)....they are not viewed as LE in any way.

But if you are thinking about it to keep you in the general area, I agree...it could help you. But you have abetter chance of getting on NYPD than NYCCD....just becasue NYPD hires more.

    Godo Luck!

    Maybe I should clarify.
    1. Detainment does not automatically provide a safe enviroment, if it did there would be no incidents within jails and prisons.
    2. Yes, detainees are searched but you would be surprised at what we find on detainees upon them reaching a jail or prison.
    3. As long as there are inmates, there will be contraband so I am unsure as to what a controlled enviroment is. A pen can be a deadly weapon as well as a food tray or any homemade weapon for that matter. (Shank, Soapsock etc.)
    4. Drug dealing, agg batt, battery on a P/O, rape, murder, attempted murder, rioting, extortion, I have responded to all of these offenses.
It is true that correctional facilities do not correct a thing but to understand the enviroment and how they work you need to experience one. If your opinion is based on actually working in a facility then I respect your opinion even if it differs from mine but if you have not worked in one, maybe you should arrange a tour of Rikers or another facility before coming to a conclusion. It is an eye opening experience.

    Finder,

Like I said. I respect your work and you have a tough job, but it is not focused on law enforcement. It is based on detention. And a integral role of providing detainment is to provide a safe facility and work on rehabilitating the individual.

As for the contraband thing, it is common in the field of criminals. On a 911 call, picking up a shopllifter or going to a domestic dispute...all have the same potential. It is not unique to corrections. Everyone deals with it. From the school principal to the store security guard to a cop on the beat to a corrections officer.

Again I respect that you have to respond to calls. But again. There is a semi-controlled environment. There are ways to to use that to your benefit and if necessary, lock it down and wait till the ESU Unit arrives. That is not afforded in most cases in the street. I am sure the jobs are numerous, but I assure you, how a CO deals with these calls, greatly differs from a police officer in the field.

Respectfully, I have been to Rikers on numerous instances. I have spent plenty of time at the Otis Bantum (CPSU). I have also spent time at Attica. My father is also a retired C/O of 25 years. I know the job and have family on the job.

Corrections is not law enforcement. It is though, an integral part of the criminal justice system. For the younger and new folks yet to attend college, Intro to Criminal Justice 101 will teach you that the criminal justice system has three distinct and, inter-dependant arms: LAW ENFORCEMENT, JUDICIAL/COURTS, and CORRECTIONS. Each plays a distinct, vital role and is necessary for the others to work, but they are different.

I hope we can agree to disagree Finder. I respect you greatly for what you do, and don't think it is something I would ever want or could do. But from my past experiences, I still stick with my original main thought: It's not Law Enforcement.

    Finder,
Also appreciate how unlike many responding to something personal, you kept it simple, organized and POLITE. For that...rep points to you!!!! (As soon as the system allows me...it keeps saying "webiste not available.")

Slightly off the subject but I am in the middle of a good book right now called "Newjack" witch is a perspective of Sing Sing prison. It is a good book and will give you a small window of thought as to what goes on in there.

    Read it....great book.

And if you want to see the prison....come on over for some beers. We can sit on my deck and look across the river at it.
