    NYPD Character Review

I am 32 yr old NYPD candidate who has to meet with my investigator for character review. Let me just say that I was not your model citizen I was arrested twice as a youth 1 for joyriding the other for fighting (paid a fine). When I became an adult I was arrested when I was 18 years of age for drunk and disorderly(paid a fine). At 21 I was arrested for fighting;disturbing the peace(paid a fine). When I was 28 I was arrested for fighting; disturbing the peace(paid a fine) When I was 30 I recieved a summons for damage private property (paid a fine.) I also was terminated for not meeting company expectations( I was a salesmen in an accounting department). However, I never taken any drugs I have been teaching in an elementary school for a year and I am a leader of a Christian Youth group. I am also enrolled in college and currently have 100 credits. I know I had a checkered past and I don't deny it. If I knew then what I know now things would be different but it's not. I am more grounded now based on my Spirituality and family. I am asking for some advice because I feel I am at a crossroad.

I'm not a LEO but it could go either way IMO. There are some obstacles to overcome. The multiple counts of fighting will be one, and the job termination will be another. You may, like me, have to apply at multiple depts and maybe several times at that. Keep charging. None of this should be enough to keep you from the job, but it may take time to get there.

    Mike,
They are going to grill you hard. Everything was fine till fighting at 28, and damage to property at 30. Maturity comes over years....like 5...not one or two. Add in you have been terminated and it is icing on the cake. Rememebr they will be able to get all the facts of those cases. Do not lie. Do not blame others. Own up...admit what you did. It could go either way, but, being totally honest with you, you may need to stay doing what you are and not get in any trouble for 2 more years...and re-applying when you are 34...just before the cut-off.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

Could swing either way, just dont be a flip flopper. (ha ha)
NYPD needs beating hearts though. It will come down to a judgment call, what your total package is. You gotta sell yourself too like anything else.

I would go through the process, being totally honest and assuming responsibility for your shortcomings. I think that if you get hired that will be great, but even if you don't, it would show up as an indicator of your continued interest if you were to re-apply at age 34, as Joeyd6 suggested.

I also agree that you should not only own up to what you did wrong, but you still have positive points to offer as well, such as your work as a youth leader and your strong spiritual beliefs. If you do well in the interview, you may find yourself offered a position.

Good luck & hang in there!

Like everyone has said, be honest. Admit what you have done, do not scapegoat the blame. I am sure the NYPD will be able to obtain the reports regarding all those cases, so don't leave anything out that might be important. Keep your head high, and stay confident. It aint over until the fat lady heads for the buffet - if that makes any sense...

If you got DQ for 1 youthful offense it must of been a bad one..they usually overlook those depending on the offense and what you tell the physcologist. Call Applicant Processing and have them check your list/exam in the Computer it will tell you if you are Qued up, Pending or dq. You need the 4 Q's to be in the next class.

    now i'm

i'm impressed they even let you get this far.

on my first day of orientation, they made everyone fill out a form listing all convictions including traffic violations. some, like you would have, needed more than one page. they collected all the forms, then literally called us up one at a time and either sent us packing or let us remain.
