If you were a BI, would you hire me?

Based on what I can provide on here, let me know what you think...

The good stuff; 27 years old, married, homeowner, clean credit, extensive volunteer experience including: with the police service, rugby; coach, referee, club president. Good job, with references from this & past job (8yrs or so total), very physically fit, very rarely social drinker, non smoker, no drugs (tried MJ once, and admit it), no *questionable* friends, honest, integrity. Score high 90s on written exams. VERY knowledgeable about our cities issues, the police service, well known to police service workers, several officers approval.

The bad stuff: No related post secondary education, trouble with speeding tickets in my youth 8+ yrs ago.

Basically, my outlook is this; I've made my mistakes growing up, I went through a phase at 17-19 years old when I did dumb things, I've grown past them, and will gladly share them with my BI, even stuff they don't ask to prove my honesty, and maturity.

I'm going to do my best to *sell* the good points about myself to my BI, and tell him flat out, that if he wants to DQ me based on something I did, that I'm fine with that, because it was my own fault. I've had to learn the hard way, and grown past those mistakes.

Depends on what kind of dumb things you're talking about when growing up, but most things that long ago won't be disqualifying. They are more interested in your honesty and seeing if you try to cover something up.

Well, my initial thought is that you definitiely appear to be a viable candidate. However, your lack of education could be a factor against you. Otherwise, based on your post, I don't see anything glaring that would make you an undesireable candidate in my opinion.

You look pretty good, how long ago was the MJ use and how many times ?

It isn't that not having a degree or military is bad , it is just that those with the degree/military are going to start off ahead of you. You will need to test/interview quite well to even the field.

I'd have to meet you in person. Body language means a lot to me and if you brag about yourself a lot, something stinks. Not to be derrogatory but I'm very sceptical of people I hire. Afterall, I have to cover my own butt first. You have to understand that. You don't necessarily have to "sell yourself", just be honest and let your history, background, etc., do the rest. If you are "selling yourself" in a police interview, it isn't going to work as well as it would for a sales position. Careful. Just giving my opinion. Good luck to you.

As long as those "dumb things" didnt include banging donkeys or killing people you should be fine. It's kinda nice to see someone actually except responsibility for their previous transgressions.....
What is your major malfunction, numbnuts? Didn't Mommy and Daddy show you enough attention when you were a child?

Star, how do you do draw the fine line between selling yourself and having a good oral interview? Can you post some suggestions of both cases?

    Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much for the input.

    The indiscretions I mentioned were:

Several speeding tickets, a couple imprudent driving tickets (dumb young guy, fast car).

One 12 hour DUI suspension, I blew under the limit, but still had some, which is an offense here.

As for the post secondary education, I am planning to start a few part time courses in related areas this spring, so that should I not get on, I will still be progressing to try again.

The one comment made by vadep, is something that really hits home for me. I have several friends also trying to get in, and they still act like children, go out drinking 2-3 nights per week, refuse to accept any responsibility for anything...

I've had to earn my way up, and learn the hard way. I was an overweight underacheiver in highschool, with poor self esteem. I turned to athletics & bodybuilding to turn my life around.

At this point, I just plan to lay all the cards on the table, and hope the BI can see me for who I really am.

    I am a BI.

The DUI would be pretty serious to me. Also the fact that you don't think so, otherwise you would have mentioned it in your first post.

"Below the legal limit" is a non-starting argument for me; if you drank & drove, then you drank & drove.

Would I hire you? Pass all the other requirements and show me your references, and then ask me again.

Thanks, and sorry GoDirectly2Jail, it just slipped my mind when I was writing it originally...these are all things I DEFINITELY plan to disclose to my BI.

I've already started compiling a list of anything even remotely questionable I've done so they can look back in good faith...
