Get a Penal Code and Vehicle Code book. For the VC, go to your local DMV and buy a copy ($3 back in the days, maybe a bit more now).
I do realize they have those classes there, I just want to come a little more prepared then the next guy when I get that far. I used to work with a local PD in for a few years in the Explorer program and was well versed in the 10 codes and basic Penal/Vehicle codes.

I agree on the failure. Since starting back in 1999, I have heard this many times and as much of it scares me, for me, Failure will not be an option.

    ~Thanks for the Tips~!

CHP will only do ride-a-longs if you are in the process. I live in San Jose, but since my friends friend used to work out of RWC, that is where I first went. When I called back this year, he had moved across the bay to Hayward and is on his way up to the academy to train.

Out of all the things to get DQ'ed for. I got DQ'ed for not having worn my contact lenses for more than 12 months. I had to take the eye test without my contacts and I could not make out any of the letters. That sucks. Oh well, now I have to wait at least 5 more months to be able to test. Hopefully I don't have to take the QAP all over again.

Well... CHP Explorers can do ride-alongs when they pass their Level II training. CHP Dispatchers also get ride-alongs.

Are you applying to any other departments? CHP may take a LONG time, especially with the current freeze.

There is no more freeze for the CHP. It was lifted last May.

I have an inside source that told me it will soon be changing to at least a couple times per year.

So when are you going in, Diggs? I was sooooo close to being in there with you. One of the officers that were administering the test told me that they were going to try to get a bunch of us into the upcoming academy class. I wish I would have gotten my contacts sooner. Like they say, hindsights 20/20. I would have settled for a 20/40 vision. LOL. Oh well, luckily I won't have to wait 'till Sept. to apply again. I also heard that they're going to start hiring more than once a year. Good luck Diggs.

11 Days from today. I'm getting anxious. I've waited almost 3 years for this. Keep at it man, I had to reapply several times to get where I am today. It took me 3 oral interviews with scores of 95 to finally get picked up. I think this is what most don't realize, a score of 95 isn't a guarantee either. They throw all 95's in a system called random selection and pull out the amount they need for that specific class. If you don't get picked you have to reapply all over again. I damn near gave up until I got the letter saying I would proceed to backgrounds, and then 3 months into that the FREEZE for a year. I was pissed. So in all it took me about 4 years to get here. Keep at it bro.
