Has anyone appealed the NYPD psych evaluation?

Im going to try to appeal their decision to fail me.. Has anyone gone through this process or knows someone who has?

    What is required to appeal?

ALSO.. has anyone failed the psych evaluation and tried going through the whole process again and passed?

    re

do you have any idea why you may have failed? Were there any awkward parts for you in the process either on the written or the oral.

Also, can you tell me what the tests were like,

    like some sample questions.

i have been told that it is extremely difficult to appeal your psych dq. my brother-in-law failed the psych over a year ago, and got a serious run-around in trying to sort it out. there are people, similar to a lawyer, who 'handle' these situations for applicants for a substantial fee - as in several thousand dollars. i believe it's designed this way to dissuade people who may not be psychologically fit - not saying that this is the case with you.

sorry i can't be more specific with my answer, hopefully someone else can shed some more light on the process - perhaps the APD. as for my brother-in-law, he has decided to pursue other avenues.

common dude I know it is a pain to answer questions, but I really really need to make this class in July, Trust me if I told you my situation you would agree. I really have no choice. That is why I have asked as many questions as I did. I cant afford to be rejected.

Misha, even if you pass everything, that doesn't mean you are getting in in July. They have to go by list numbers and the old tests go first, so theres a chance any one of us won't make it because they are full.

Misha, you should make back up plans in case you don't get into the July academy.

if one weren't to get into the July academy because it is simply full, to what extent does all of this jumping through hoops need to be repeated?

Only the PAT and the 1.5 have to be repeated for each academy.

The medical and the psych last for 30 months I think (I could be wrong).

I am sure about the PAT and 1.5 though.

    Apom,
The only way to appeal is with an attorney/psych. There are some advertised in the Chief. But they will send you to their own psych who will hammer you even harder with questions to really determine if you afit. If you are, exect a costly and long battle....almost as much as waiting 30 months and just re-taking it. Ask if you failed teh written and oral. Ask teh Canidate help desk if you can re-take it? You never know....maybe somebody will give in if you are nice.

I got DQ'd by the NYPD for psych back in 2001. Was told it was because of my drinking habits in college (Graduated in 99). I was semi-honest about drinking (stupid move) I assumed that they would understand some excessive drinking during college, but in the eyes of the NYPD any more than 5 drinks in 1 sitting is binge drinking and constitues a DQ. I told them I drank on Fri and Sat nights and would often have more than 5 beers in a night, unless I had a game. So I appealed this DQ, spent $2500 for my own psych guy to test me then he submit his evaluation. During this time I had taken another Nypd exam, just to keep a fresh list number. And didn't drink any alcohol for a year! While waiting to hear about the appeal I was called on my new list number. I called the canidate desk and told them the situation (got called but awaiting appeal) I was told to got through the processing as I am called. Ace everything and do another Psych. Get grilled during the oral psych about previous (appealed) psych. I explain that the drinking I did was in college and was years ago. I have graduated, gotten a job and haven't drank since learning that I was DQ'd for my drinking habits. Sure enough I get word that the original DQ was upheld, so I am DQ'd a second time.
Its been over a year at this point. So I appeal this new DQ and use a Doc that I found in the Chief. Dr. Daley? He was the former Director of Psych Services for the NYPD and knew every name of the people who looked at my file. He also said that most of the people working in psych services are terrible and got jobs with the city because they couldn't do it elsewhere. Reading my file he laughed saying that "if I only knew the problems this guy has" referring to the psychologist who interviewed me. I spend another $2000 for his evaluation and appeal. During the evaulation we go over everything and he tells me that I should have no problem getting this overturned. After another year and a half I got a letter stating that the original decision was upheld and that I am not psychologically fit for police work. All because I thought Integrity was everything and I told them the truth about drinking years ago I college. Since then I have decided that I would relocate and apply elsewhere. I have and have gone through psych's with several dept's without an issue.
