    Nypd 3007 question

    All,

After going for the pre-screening and receiving the packet of forms to fill out, I've completed these forms and don't know what to do next.
The instructions say to complete the forms within 10 business days, yet also say to NOT MAIL THEM.
Are we suppossed to hold on to them and hand them into our investigator at our medical exam?

I've tried calling the candidate helpline and my investigator, but all phones just keep ringing - nobody picks up.

Also, for the average guy (i consider myself in average shape - where I can bench my own body weight and run a mile - but am out of breath quickly) - would you recommend going through a vigorous training routine - or just a general workout routine (jog/situps/pushups) until the academy puts you in better shape?

One more thing - does anyone know the definitive pay scale for nypd newbies, then detective (3rd grade) and sergeant?
I've heard that starting out is around 35k, then if you become detective - its only 2k more.

Oh yea, and are the hours for the academy the same as what they would be for a new p.o - with different shifts and such, or is it a 8-4 thing?

    thnx

From my experience, they don't want people to fill out the forms until they finish their medical screening. After that, you have ten days to complete your forms, contact your investigator to setup a meeting and hand them in.

The basic physical tests to get into the academy aren't difficult if you're in decent shape. If you have no experience jumping over fences, I'd suggest you practice. It's not difficult, but it gave plenry of people problems when I went for my agility. Personally, I'd strive to meet the phsycial requirements of the academy level (12:30 for the 1.5 mile run, push-up and sit-ups, etc.) when you take the entry tests.

Entry level pay isn't great, it's about $36k plus $1k uniform allowance. That increases annually, with a large step increase after 5 years. The pay scales change frequently and with the NYPD looking to sign a new contract with the city by June, I think they'll change again.

This totally depends on the size of your academy class and the instructors. For larger classes such as the one slated for July 2004, the class will be broken into two groups. The NYPD plans to have them rotate between 7-3 and 4-12 shifts weekly.

I heard something about 3 squads in July '04.... is that true? if so i think that would mean that they would go to the 5-2/5-3 chart right away...thereby leading to working weekends right off the bat.... also... what have you heard about a new contract being signed for june'04?

Overtime pay depends on the time you're asked to come in relative to your last / next shift. Usually it's time and a half, but it can vary. The terms of overtime pay are stipulated in the (now expired) NYPD contract with the city.

As for the July '04 class, last I heard (last week at the academy) they're still planning two groups with rotating 7-3, 4-12 shifts.

NYPD is currently working under the terms of the last contract although it has officially expired. Negotiations have been slow thus far, both sides walked away deadlocked last month. I have friends and family on the force, and most believe they will sign a new contract this summer. The new contract is expected to be renewable every two years. Entry-level pay is supposedly one of the major issues with the new contract because in size NYPD is one of the top-ten departments in the country, but their pay ranks like #150+.
