    NYPD List # question?

Is it true that the initial list # you get when you first call to find out your results of the exam, that number changes when you get your info in the mail about the rest of the process? It seems that the list # at first is for the exam you took and then it's grouped with all the exams given. How did it work for those of you who made it to the rest of the process? I have my list # from the test and I'm waiting for the info in the mail.

You're give your exam # and your list #. The list number corresponds with your placement on the actual list for a given exam based on your score. From my experience, your list number doesn't change during the hiring process for the NYPD.

Just trying to figure out how they determine who goes on with the process after the exam. Do they take a certin percentage of each exam? Maybe there is no set way, I know i'm # 169 on the out of stata exam 3053, but i have not be able to find out how many people took that exam. I'm on active duty, was told I could of started the hiring process now but i have to wait till I'm within 6 months of retiring from the Navy. So I take it I did well enough to get that far but in reality i don't think there were thousands of people taking that exam like the in-state N.Y. exam.

I was under the assumption that they go off old lists first. The problem is, the chances someone will take the job decrease after the first or second classes go by after the test. Thats why so many people got called from 3007. I'm not sure when it comes down to selecting who is in what class, what lists are they going to take. Will they take mostly 3007 people even if people from old lists are set to expire soon? I guess we will find out...

As far as list numbers changing... Mine actually DID change. Either that or they made a mistake. I got my notice to report for processing before my scorecard, and the notice had list number 263 on the envelope. However, my scorecard and medical mailings have a different list number, about 800 spots higher.

The number of people they take depends on the needs of the department and the number of people who take the test. For test #3007, they called approximately the top 7-8% of the 14,000+ people who took the test. The rest of the candidates scored in the top 10% from other tests and were recalled. Many people take the NYPD test and have no intention of joining the department.

I know at least 5 people who scored in the top 5% of NYPD test #3007 and went into the NY Fire Department instead. Nevertheless, if you score high on the written test and don't ask to be removed from the eligible list, you remain in the system for the next 4 years.
