I went through the oral and written psych before my knee exploded during the agility, and it was more boring than anything. My oral psych lasted only 15-20 mins although I've heard other people taking 1+ hour. My shink didn't ask questions based on my responses to the written psych test. He just asked background questions such as family history, work history, most traumatic experience, etc. All that information you fill out during the written psych and he questions you about it.

The only advice I can offer is to be honest. They don't expect you to be perfect, but they do expect you to admit any past mistakes.

Marty: If its your initial orientation visit, you'll need some background information:

Education: Make sure you know the names, dates and locations of all schools you've attended from 9th grade through college. Also, if you can, bring official copies of your college transcripts.

Employment - Try and have general information on all companies you've worked for and the dates of employment since you've left high-school.

Driving: Know how many moving violations and parking summons you've received.

Criminal: Know the date, location, and offense for any arrests, convictions or criminal court summons.

Credit: Know the outstanding balance on your mortgage, school loans, or any outstanding debts.

The paperwork is endless the first day. I was there from 5:15 AM to 3:45 PM in the freezing cold with only a 30 minute break. Good luck.

    Hey baseball guy,

Won't not admitting to anything that's not documented make you fail a polygraph? I know NYPD doesn't use one, but anywhere else lying about something might be detected by the machine.

    Just wondering...

What types of stuff do you fill out at the written psych (other than the pictures, and true/false). Is there any essay type questions (most traumatic experiences or something), and are dates of specifics needed?

I'm not sure about other departments, but the NYPD gives you a background booklet. It consists of education, employment, family, medical, drug, criminal, and motor vehicle history. The shrink will take this information and ask questions based upon it. For example, you're asked to write the name of every school you've attended since 9th grade. The shrink will ask you:

Did you ever fail a class?
Did you ever get left-back a grade?
Were you ever placed in advanced classes?
What was your GPA in high-school?
What was your GPA in college?
Why did you choose your major?
Were you ever disciplined for misbehavior in high-school or college?
Did you do drugs in high-school or college?
How many friends did you have in high-school and college?

How many questions they ask depends on the information you give in the background booklet and your answers to the MMPI-2 test. There's no real way to prepare for the oral, just be honest and it should go fine.
