    signing contracts...

I was just wondering if any other states made officers sign contracts after they graduate from the acadamy.I had to sign a 2 year contract with my department but if i break the contract with them before the 2 years is up i still owe the state of georgia for the time remaining on the contract.

This is a response from outside the US so it might not be helpful. My department doesn't do this. However the military in Australia does, it's called "return of service" so where the RAAF may train someone to be a pilot in a particular aircraft they expect a return on their investment. If that pilot quits before the term expires, say to join QANTAS then they are expected to compensate the RAAF monetarily.

I know of a small dept that does this as people they pay to attend the academy etc will quit and go to another ( higher paying) dept. The deal is pro-rated for 3 yrs. Included is the cost of the 5 month academy and uniform expenses.

Unless the law has changed, in Georgia you have technically an 18 month obligation to the department that sent you through the police acadamey. Most departments make it 2 years or even 3 years, and what happens is if you are hired by another department before that time is up, your old department can request your new department to pay the cost of the acadamy, training, uniforms, salary etc. It doesn't usually happen, but it can. I would simply follow the state law and after 18 months hunt other employment if I wanted to.
