    NYPD July Class

There was some speculation regarding how many people the NYPD plan to hire for the class in July. The background investigator conducting today's meeting said they're planning to take 2000 in July 2004 and 2000 in January 2005. It was a terribly long and cold day, but at least we're on to the next phase of the process. So much paperwork, so little time.

Did any of you tell the truth on the drug question? If yes, what was their reaction?

    Hello,

I have been out of town (actually in NYC) for the past week and I got home to find out that I should have been in NYC yesterday. Not being there is supposedly prohibitive for any chance at the July class.

Does anyone know how true this?

Call then up and tell them you couldn't make it. See if they will give you another date. The number to call is Applicant Processing Division: 718-972-7344

Okay, I am going next Sunday. No problems.
Anyone have an idea as to what I should expect? What happens here?
Also, I am 3rd on the list, does this help for final considerations, or is it simply an item that gets me through the door?

Make sure you get there early. There's plenty of paperwork to fill out, all of your preliminary background investigation papers. It includes your employment history for the past 5 years, credit history, criminal/traffic history, education, etc.

You're assigned to a background investigator at the meeting and given your medical check date. I got there 45 mins early, 5:45AM on Satuday and didn't walk out until about 3PM. Be prepared for a very long day. I hope they don't keep the windows open like they did to us. It had to be 40 degrees in the room all day, I'm still sick.

Should we bring anything with us other than assigned in the letter?

There is no way I can remember the hiring dates of the jobs I have had and other such data, e.g. I moved a lot as a student.

The contact info of your current employer would help. I had trouble remembering the dates I was hired and quit on two previous jobs, I estimated. The investigator told us that they will file a social security earnings check which will detail exactly when you were paid for different jobs, tax receipts, for the past five years.

I don't think they care if you're a few months off, rather it's about trying to coverup being fired from a previous job or denying you worked somewhere altogether.

    Outside of that;

Know the dates and locations of any traffic violations (including moving violations, parking tickets, headlights, accidents, etc.).
Know the dates of any criminal / civil court cases (including divorce, bankruptcy).
If you're a student, know your outstanding student loan balance.
If you have a mortgage, know your outstanding balance.

I estimated on most of my answers to the best of my knowledge. They explained how they research most of the questions they ask, and it's clear they can find out anything. Honesty's the best policy.

Parking tickets...doh! I hope that doesn't include those issued by University Police! I got a few of those for such offenses as parking in a metered spot for 2 minutes too long and not displaying my parking pass. I'm not sure if those count, they have all been paid, but dates or even when I got them I have no idea. I am pretty sure though that they are not included because payment went to the University (also any appeal needed to be made to the school, and there was no option for trial), not to the town. For speeding tickets or anything else criminal, you would have to go to court in town.

For those of you going next week...you have to list EVERYTHING!!!!!! EVERY arrest, EVERY summons, EVERY moving violation, EVERY outstanding parking ticket (from university police or not), EVERYTHING!!!! They will stress this heavily and tell you exactly what I am telling you now!!!!! It does not matter whether the ticket was dismissed or not, you HAVE to list it! Don't ask stupid questions and hold up the process like people did this past Saturday. Just be honest and list anything that has occured because you will feel very stupid when they find out and you didn't tell them first!!

Quite frankly, I don't think they even care too much about what you have done (as long as its not a felony or a repeating offense which shows disregard for the law), as long as you are honest! Honesty shows good morale and character. They will even tell you that they are judging your character.

By the way, we were there from 6:30 to 3:00 in a very crowded auditorium!! Also bring food to eat during the break because the cafteria only has vending machines.

i must have been in the 'other' room, because it was pretty stuffy in there. and yeah, lots of stupid questions being asked - the one detective was pretty clear and thorough, i wondered what some people were thinking asking those questions.

and guys, let's not give them too much advice, we are all competing for the same jobs! let 'em sweat a little.

Lol... i agree... anyway... just be prepared to sit in the same spot for hours doing little more than waiting for someone to call your name... not too much in the way of filling paperwork out... although the paperwork in that manilla folder appears ENDLESS... definitely bring something to eat, and wear a jacket in the morning... i got there at about 6:10 and didnt get in the building till around 8:00... i was frozen solid... I think that is what made me cold all day... hopefully the projector works for you guys... anyway, I have my medical this friday, and from what I understand the physical will be the following week if all goes well...

    good luck everyone...
