Is theft from employer a disqualifier for Texas State Trooper

Without getting into specifics, I'd stolen merchandise (1 item, valued under $40) from an employer, around 6 years ago. I was never caught and left the company in good standing. I've since joined the military and will exit with an honorable discharge later this year. Will this disqualify me from the application process? I'm not looking to get into a moral debate with anyone over the ethics of my past actions, so if your plan is to ridicule me and chastize me, please save your fingers the workout. I understand my wrong doing and know nothing is overlooked in the application process. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to RP.

First off, it's important to understand that you don't get to choose how people respond to your posts here. You came here, you asked a question, and the people who choose to answer will do so however they choose. You can then decide how much value to put on those responses for yourself.

Having said that, I don't think that would be an automatic disqualifier under the circumstances you list. Be honest about it, and if it was a one time bad decision it will not keep you out of law enforcement. You've had time to show that you've changed as a person and your honorable service will go a long way to make up for the blemish you mentioned.

Most folks don't come into somebody elses house and dictate how others will treat them. It is arrogant. It shows a lack of maturity, lack of common courtesy and a lack of ability to accept criticism. It also shows you lack humility. All qualities found in decent canidates for this line of work.

You state you "understand" your wrong doing; however you show no remorse nor address what you have done or will do to right your wrong.

For the NYPD, a very lax hiring standard, you would be a DQ for theft from an employer as an adult within ten years. Just because you change and move on in life and do good things, does not mean your past is forgotten or forgiven. Stealing from an employer is looked at like a big deal here. You have opportunities to steal all the time as a cop...from dead folks home; crime scenes; banks; stores in middle of the night during alarm calls, etc....

My apologies for sounding arrogant. It was said with the intent that I will not acknowledge any comments about me not owning up to my faults. I consider all crime equal, but it's not my job or anyone elses who is not a judge or jury, to decide the punishment. That being said I have no need to show remorse on the forum to anyone. The crime is dealt with in my mind and will be dealt with by God, and no amount of saying I feel bad or I'm sorry can change what has been done. Thanks for the replies.

Good luck with that attitude when questioned on it. I sit on the hiring panel and if you gave that speech to us, you would here :" Thanks, don't call us. Next!"

I don't care if you sit on a hiring panel or that you think you know how I would answer the question. The fact is I don't have to be remorseful to you. This forum is not the proper venue to air out my sins and ask for forgiveness. I came here to ask a question, and these are the same kind of responses people deal with daily on the forum. I gave information that pertained to the question. I didn't fill it with clutter and what ifs and i'm so sorry. I'm not here to debate and argue ethics and morals but if your concern is such I can entertain you all day in a private message.

Police work is full of ethics and morals. The question a hiring panel has to ask themselves is if you are tempted with an item you lust for, do you have the integrity to do the right thing.

Immature, attitudinal response, definitely not required since you came here asking a question and you've received nothing but helpful answers. I'd say your chances of being hired in LE are exactly zero or less.

So you come here with the truth and plan on lying during the panel? Yoru answer/response should be the same here or there. And you should care what I think and what others on panels think...we see and deal with canidates and backgroudn histories all the time. Our experience and knowledge is why you came here. You are delaing with one issue. I have dealt with hundreds with canidates. Some made it by us, some stopped processing. If you don't care what we think, there was no need for you to come here!

Your right...you don't. But nowhere in your detailed explanation did you voice remorse. You obviously don't get it." Nobody is asking you to confess your sins. You are asking your chances to get hired. Take a hint to go rectify the wrong...aka head back to the store and pay up like a man. Then deal with it. You are obviously not sorry you did what you did and that is factor. In addition, thanks for telling me how to post and reply on here after 8,000+ posts. With your half dozen posts you may be able to teach me how to answer questions better on here!

You cant debate ethics and morals of stealing when you did it and don't think you have to be sorry for such and only have to answer to God later on.

You guys are hilarious. I recieved my answer from the horses mouth. Despite what you all think my recruiter answered my questions in full without any judgement or penalty. He also was pleased with my no nonsense approach as i didn't beg him to right my wrongs, or fill his ear with any rhetoric. He didn't seem to need an apology, and i did observe him well and I'm happy to report there was no chip to be found on or around his shoulder. Looks like there's a future for me in law enforcement yet. Already passed a polygraph for my top secret clearance and have never missed out on a job due to poor interview. Thanks again everyone! Its been a blast, but I won't be on here anymore.

Then there's no reason to keep this open.

If you display this kind of cocky attitude around the senior officers in the department when/if you get hired... you'll make quite a name for yourself pretty quickly.

Believe it or not, the officers on here were trying to help you and guide you in a better direction.
