NOW WHAT AM I GOING TO DO!?!?!?!?! HELP FROM BI's

I'm 28 years old and I've never NEVER been fired from a job! Today (approx. 2hrs ago), I quit in leiu of termination.

I've been with the company for about a year and this issue happened over an incomplete incident report I made, which caused me to be documented. I had 2 prior documentations for being late once and another for no show (misread the schedule).

My boss (who happens to be my brother in law) told me that I was being placed on suspension (which means he's giving me a chance to resign before being formally terminated) so I opted to resign rather than be terminated thinking that this would be better when the issue was brought up to my BI. My Brother-In-Law advised me that this would look better than a termination (he is a reserve with one of the departments I am applying with). Really, I'm awestruck... I've never been documented for anything by a prior employer let alone what essentially is being terminated!!!

I currently have 4 other apps in with other departments and now I have to contact all of them and fill in that "HAVE YOU EVER IN THE LAST 10 YEARS BEEN TERMINATED, RESIGNED IN LIEU OF TERMINATION, BEEN INVOLUNTARILLY TERMINATED..." question!! I feel like utter crap right now. Frankly, I'm more embarrassed than anything!

So are there any BI's or others that have experience in this matter? I just want to find out if I should kiss it all goodbye or if I still have a chance...

Please bear in mind I was previously convicted of misdemeanor DUI in 2005, and driving on suspended in 2003 and 2001 when I was 17.

Well....it isn't great but it isn't like you were stealing from the company. Your background is what it is. Not as good as some and better than others.

be honest, take responsibility for your actions/inactions, hope you get a chance to explain and your explanation is reasonable.

IMignorantO, you either have a really lame brother in law and/or something substantially negative happened as a result of what you screwed up on...

It's funny you say that lol. I wouldnt say that he is lame at all, he just takes the job VERY seriously, and I find that respectable. You've gotta be passionate about something in life, and he is passionate about the LP Department (I worked for him doing hotel security).

I wonder if I should have heeded the warnings of the family? They say it's a bad idea to work for family. Even my sister (his wife) told me It was a bad iea. hmm...

I've been doing some thinking... I pick up my final check on monday and I could recall my letter of resignation and have the company proceed with suspending me pending further investigation (meaning I will be fired come monday). In this case I will be eligible to collect unemployment benefits. Is this something that would reflect more negatively than if I were to simply resign. I have not been given the option yet to resign in leiu of termination, I simply resigned based on past knowledge of what happens to employees who are "suspended pending investigation". What do you think? Are there any BI's that can add any insight?

What did you do? Details? Depending on them I would have let them fire me......then you coudl have got unemployment and state on the record you didn't do anything wrong. A resignation in liu of firing to me makes the person look guilty...caught...and left before getting fired.

I would be honest on the applications, you'd gain nothing from omitting the truth. I would simply explain what you stated here as best as you can. I would also try to minimize it and maximize your other positive points on your application and in your work experience. Good luck!

Good advice from all of you. I have the PAT and POST written coming up this month on the 22nd and I've been studying my police exam prep book like crazy.

@ Joey - To answer your question, I recieved this disciplinary action due to an incomplete incident report. We had a guest who was robbed and after the incident I drafted my report in a word document to spell check it. I then cut and pasted it to the report template, but apparently, it only pasted half of the narrative. A while later the report was subpoeaned so it was not ready when it was needed. I did have the completed narrative saved in a word document, however, that computer was malfunctioning and we replaced it shortly after, so anything that was saved there is now history. My brother in law placed me on suspension pending investigation of the incident. I go tommorow morning to hear the verdict.
