    Benefits for families?

Do the benefits for police officers extend out to the immediate family like health insurance? or would we have to buy separate insurance?

    Benefits For Families?

It depends on the agency you work for. Typically, there are fringe benefits associated with our jobs, like medical insurance. Some agencies have an open enrollment period in which you can select you benefits. In some cases, insurance is completely paid by the employer for the employee and family coverage might be extra, but it really varies a lot from place to place.

It can even vary from contract time to contract time. We used to get fully paid benefits for us and the family, but I think this last contract has the guys paying a small amount.

Police agencies are like private companies, they all operate on different pay scales and benefits. A lot depends on the area of the country too. Where there is strong labor unions, pay and benefits are just about always better, same as with the private sector.

I get medical , dental , vision, prescription etc. My family gets everything I do and we only pay a deductible for tests and a small copay for doctor visits or ER visits.

When I retire I get 50% paid medical and when I turn 55 , it goes to 75%.
