    sex offender registries?

For my final research project in my English class, I am writing a paper over Sex Offender Registries. In this paper, we have to conduct an interview with a credible person on the topic, and I thought this would be a good place to ask. If you could answer these few questions I would greatly appreciate it (you dont have to answer all of them).

    1. What is the purpose of the corrections system?

    2. What is your definition of a Sex offender?

    3. How do sex offenders differ from other offenders? (Personality traits and behaviors)

    4. Is society’s stereotype of sex offender’s accurate?

    5. Are sex offender registries beneficial to law enforcement agencies?

    6. Do you think that sex offender registries are a violation of offenders privacy and rights?

    7. Do you think sex offender registries are effective in making the community safer for the public?

    Thanks!

Ali, first of all, welcome to RP from the Florida Panhandle.

Secondly, this is not a place to come and ask for an interview. I have quoted your above, highlighting the part about "credible person" because how credible do you believe your instructor is going to find the references "marinepilot," "samuel," "mcsap," "Cat_Doc," or any other you might meet on here? We come here and many of us wish to remain somewhat anonymous, so you most likely won't get real names, and if you did, how would you know we weren't making up fake names anyway? The best place to get an interview from a law enforcement officer (LEO) is to call your local LE agency and ask to set up an interview with a real person, and that way you'd have a much more credible source.

Also, just as an aside, we don't usually type out all the answers for you anyway because we're not huge fans of people just cutting and pasting our words and passing them off as their own. Not saying you're doing that, but it is definitely something that could happen, so most of us usually pass on posts like these.

Good luck on your assignment, especially the part about learning to interview a real person and having the interaction with the interviewee that makes for real learning!

We really need a sticky for this.

You really need to turn off your computer and go to a police station and talk to an officer in person. It would be a better experience for you because it will be a discussion. The bad news is, you won't be able to copy and paste our answers on your homework.

I believe that society often has a sterotyped view of a sex offender as being middle aged men, but in reality it could be someone who you dont expect at all which with the registry it makes it possible to know. However, I also think that with all of the general public having access to the registry the offenders may be harrassed and then isolated from society because of the negative view people have towards sex offenders.

My professor actually suggested using a method like this to obtain an interview, and after doing extensive research on the topic I believe I will be able to choose which responses are credible (since it is opinion based questions) and supports my essay.

This only answers 1 or 1 1/2 of your questions. Where are YOUR other answers?

Btw, why do you think people have a negative view towards sex offenders? Do you think convicted sex offenders should have the same rights as non-criminals citizens? What different crimes could result in a person being labeled as a sex offender? Do you have a family and/or kids? How do you think your opinions might change about this topic if your situation was opposite? What if you or someone you cared about was a victim of a sex offender?

Again, post YOUR answers to ALL your questions and then we'll go from there... AND, if you are writing an essay, what are your topic and opinions?

Could you discuss the positive view people should have on a sex offender?

I say they are isolated from society because of the research i have done through the colleges library. and to answer the rest of the questions here:
    1. What is the purpose of the corrections system? To rehabilitate offenders so they can become productive members of society

    2. What is your definition of a Sex offender? anyone who uses force and does not have consent when engaging in sexual activity

    3. How do sex offenders differ from other offenders? (Personality traits and behaviors) can vary because all offenders are different

    4. Is society’s stereotype of sex offender’s accurate? No because anyone could be a sex offender.

    5. Are sex offender registries beneficial to law enforcement agencies? Yes because they provide documentation and an aid to finding people who commit other sex related crimes

    6. Do you think that sex offender registries are a violation of offenders privacy and rights? No because sex offenders have committed a crime and it is apart of their punishment. If illegal aliens dont have rights then why should they?

    7. Do you think sex offender registries are effective in making the community safer for the public? Yes because they alert the public of unsuspected offenders.

the topic is Should or Should there not be a sex offender registry? ( i took the should side)

I have done my research and know what I think. I just need another opinion to meet the requirements of the essay.

    Is that the only purpose?

    2. What is your definition of a Sex offender? anyone who uses force and does not have consent when engaging in sexual activity
So, if someone does NOT use force and HAS consent, he/she could NOT be a sex offender or guilty of a sex-related crime? Are there any sex offender crimes that don't involve engaging in sex? What is your definition of "sexual activity"?

    3. How do sex offenders differ from other offenders? (Personality traits and behaviors) can vary because all offenders are different
Are there any personality traits and behaviors commonly found in sex offenders that are different than other criminals?

    4. Is society’s stereotype of sex offender’s accurate? No because anyone could be a sex offender.
What IS society's stereotype of a sex offender? What is a stereotype in general and how does a stereotype come to be?

    5. Are sex offender registries beneficial to law enforcement agencies? Yes because they provide documentation and an aid to finding people who commit other sex related crimes
    Agree.

    6. Do you think that sex offender registries are a violation of offenders privacy and rights? No because sex offenders have committed a crime and it is apart of their punishment. If illegal aliens dont have rights then why should they?
If registries are a good idea and reasonable as part of punishment, why aren't other crimes/criminals also forced to register? Also, if the corrections system is for rehabilitation and criminals are released after being rehabilitated, why would there be a need for registries?

    7. Do you think sex offender registries are effective in making the community safer for the public? Yes because they alert the public of unsuspected offenders.
What is an "unsuspected offender"? "unsuspected offender" sounds like someone who commits sex crimes but has never been caught (or suspected to be an offender). And, if someone has never been caught, you won't find them on any sex offender registries...

the topic is Should or Should there not be a sex offender registry? ( i took the should side)

I have done my research and know what I think. I just need another opinion to meet the requirements of the essay.
What are reasons for and against requiring registration for convicted sex offenders? What are your arguments FOR - how to you refute the arguments Against?
