Alcohol in a small commercial vehicle

    Good Day all,
I know the law for at least large commerial vehicles says you may not transport alcohol any where on your truck unless it is part of your shipment . I do not drive a large truck anymore but I do drive a pu truck with DOT numbers on it. do any of you know if I am breaking the law by picking up a bottle of wine on my rounds. I have asked this to a few state troopers who stopped me for drivng in the HOV lane(did not see wife in back seat of pu truck) also I ask the commerial vehicle inpectors who had a booth set up at our county fair and they did not know too.

If it's inside the cab depending on the state law and how it reads, you may be in violation. To avoid it, I would put it in a box in the bed of your PU. Then it's cargo..

Simply because a vehicle ( notice I didnt say truck) has a USDOT # on the side does not mean that it is a commercial vehicle. What is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating ( GVWR) of the truck ?

Anyway you look at this, it is a bad idea.
Worse case, you are driving this winter and roll the pickup on snow and ice.
The bottle in the back breaks and leaks into the cab.
You really think your company is going to continue your employment after
reading the accident report with booze found in the vehicle?
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

According to the Federal Regs ( 49 CFR) ...you need a medical card and a USDOT # if...

The GVWR or combined truck and trailer GVWR's exceed 10,000 pounds AND you go out of state.

The GVWR or combined truck and trailer GVWR's exceed 17,000 pounds period.

So if you driving a F -350 truck registered at 10,000 lbs and you are not pulling anything , you dont need the card or the number.

If you are driving an F-350 registered at 12,000 pounds and go to WI , you need everything except a CDL. If you go over 150 air miles , you would need a log book.

This only applies to vehicles in commerce , not RV's.

The feds call anything over 10,000 pounds a Comm Vehicle and some states may do so but for the most part , states dont do so. PA calls them Motor Carrier Vehicles.

If a company wants to put a USDOT # on a F-150 , they certainly can. They would only NEED it if they towed a trailer and together , they weighed over 10,000 pounds while going out of state.
