In Oregon you could do it as long as you didn't drive after dark. We require a light illuminating the plate at night.

I think you are going to have a problem.

VC 5201 requires that the license plate be securely fastened. Merely propping it up in the window or taping it to the glass won't do. That's what the four screw holes on the license plate are for.

You are also going to have to comply with 24601 VC which requires that you have a separate lamp so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear license plate during darkness and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. When the rear license plate is illuminated by a lamp other than a required tail lamp, the two lamps shall be turned on or off only by the same control switch at all times.

Trying to permanently manufacture something like that for you rear window is going to be more time consuming and costly that screwing your license plate on the rear of you car where it normally goes.

Why? You will draw attention to yourself and the car. Do you really want that?

As many other officer said- NO.

You don't have to put your plate in the exact place the manufacturer suggests in when building your vehicle, however it must be permanently affixed, easily visible, and illuminated at night. Inside your back window would be none of the above. (You also have to have a front plate attached to the vehicle)

Then keep the CA plate on while you dirve and when you park it at your shows, switch plates. Switch back for the ride home.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

So put some magnets on the back of the " German " tag and just put it over top of your CA plate WHILE IN THE PARKING LOT. Remember to pop it off before you head back out on the highway.

Sigh mcsap, you should know that magnet plates will scratch paint!

Fairly bad idea if you plan on driving it on the street. I've stopped several people who thought it would be cool to put a foreign front plate on their vehicle with a CA plate on the back.

Since presenting false evidence of registration is an arrestable offense in CA, it's not the best idea to put a plate on a vehicle that doesn't belong on it.

You can do whatever you want with your ride at a car show, but when it hits the street it needs to meet the vehicle code requirements. Problem is, most people with "show" cars can't resist playing with their toys while out and about. (hydraulics, underbody lights, modified engine parts, nitrous, modified exhaust, kazillion watt stereo systems, etc...)
