    NYPD ride along

I am an Australian police officer working in the state of New South Wales. I have just recently been in contact with NYPD about organizing a ride along while there in October 2011. I was wondering what the chances of actually getting a ride along is and how long it would be for. I have heard that the police don't really like doing this for the public as they are unaware of who they are and why they want to do the ride along so don't do much at all while they are there as they can't trust them. As I am a fellow officer would this be different ? Hoping to see how policing works in New York compared to Australia.

About 4 hours.....as a cop from another country it may go longer, but that is the discretion of the two cops you ride with. They make that call.

You know what place your looking to ride? Have an exact date or possible few days in mind? I can give you a # to call.

I have received an E-Mail from NYPD community affairs and a detective there said he would organize the ride along. I will either be looking at a tuesday afternoon on the 13th October or friday 17th October. Not sure of what area yet, but would like something close to where we are staying on west 57th street. Any recommendations would be great along with a number to call. The detective at Community affairs sounded like he could get me the ride along, so fingers crossed.

There is a link from memory on the opening forum page, alternatively, PM OscarMitre who is SAPOL and does the AUS verifications.

What precinct is the Community Affairs Officer with? That is the precinct you will be riding in. No harm in asking him what precinct such will occur. If you show up with a few patches or challenge coins and even a Aussie hat for the supervisor, you day may be a full shift if you want and you may get a few things to bring home.

Joey, we dont do coins over here, never took off.

Hats, patches, tie pins are always good currency!! The other one I found that was good currency for trade was notebook covers or note books with agency logos. Just something different!

SCott - the verification thing is pretty simple, a member will just ring your LAC and ask if you work there or get you to email them from work email. Pretty simple process. I was actually working when they tried to call me, I think Wombat311 (who I havent seen around here for AGES) got a bit of a start when I answered the phone!!

Thanks Joey, Yeah I was looking at a precinct near my hotel, It's the Salisbury Hotel at 123 West 57th Street near Carnegie Hall. I will have some patches and maybe also a hat to swap, so will do it for sure. HAHAHAHA make sure the supervisor is happy and so will you. I got an e-mail back and was told to fill out and send an application to a Detective Jeff THOMPSON. Not sure what precinct he is from. Not long to go before I come over now, so I better get it done quick. Thanks again and if you have any advice on what precincts are close to my hotel I would appreciate it.
