Question about a 10+y/o OTH and becoming a LEO

Hello my name is Josh. I am currently living in Alabama. I was once young and stupid. At 19 I was dumb and ended up getting an OTH. My question is: Is it possible to get a LEO job as a vet with an OTH? I am currently working with my local VA to get my discharge over turned to a General. But if that fails was just curious. Becoming a LEO / Military was / is the only thing I'm good at. Thank you very much for your input!

A lot of agencies will accept only honorable discharges. A general won't help, I don't think. Even if they do, a lot will depend on why you got a OTH and what you've done since then.

If you believe you were good at being in the military, why did you end up with an OTH? And what's to say your "good" performance wouldn't be repeated as an LEO?

I think you have quite the uphill battle here, and there may not be any way to win. I'd seriously look into other career choices as you have permanently closed many doors with your OTH.

Not to be an arse, but brother, if you received an Other Than Honorable, you weren't that good in the military.

Now how one is good at becoming a LEO, without actually having became an LEO, is beyond BIG.

If you applied at my department with an "Other than Honorable" discharge there is about a 5% chance your application would go to the bottom of the pile.

There is about a 94% chance it would go straight into the garbage.

The other one percent is the chance that the application would get lost and no one would ever see it at all....

This is the minimum standard for AZ POST certification:

    7. Not have been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces;
However, in a market absolutely saturated with applicants who have honorable discharges, I say you face an uphill battle. Expect there to be lots of questions about the reasons behind the OTH. You'll need to prove you weren't a bonehead over the last 10 years and changed your ways.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

I had several issues at the time when I got the OTH. My Bradley Commander was beating the hell out of me every time we went down range. My fiance was cheating on me with other soldiers in my barracks and a meth dealer. I didn't handle them the way I should have. I ended up running and going awol 2 times for a few days each. I tried to get help from the Chaplain but after explaining my problem I was told by my BC I was gunna get "beat down" next time we went down range.

None of these issues are a excuse and I understand that. I do not wish to make excuses for myself. I did what I did and am not proud of it.

Since then I have been taking care of 2 sick family members. As a live in health care provider.

Please I don't need to be scolded here. I have already realized the mistake I made and how seriously it has affected my life. Nothing anyone here can say will affect how I bad I feel for neglecting my duty in the Army.

"I didn't handle things the way I should have" is vague at best. Clearly with an OTH that is the case. Just realize you have an uphill battle for this job especially if you actions included physical violence or related threats.

The next sentence says what I did so its not that Vague

There was no violence or any threats made. I have no criminal record and very few tickets none within the last 7 years.

What do you mean by "beat down" by your commander?

Go ahead and apply, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm not scolding, but a lot of us had problems when we were in the military and didn't find the need to go AWOL.

He was a transfer from marine recon and had a anger issue because he lost a few ranks during the xfer. By beat down I mean he would beat the hell out of me. I fought back the best I could in most cases but I got injured a few times. I spoke to a few people in my chain of command about it and even spoke to the chaplain but nothing helped.

Thank you to everyone for your assistance.

Wait a minute.... You were physically assaulted by an NCO, reported it and it wasn't investigated? There were no witnesses either? I was in the Army for 6 years, both enlisted and as a officer and even back in the 60's that's incomprehensible.

I'm calling BS on this too, especially if you went outside your chain to a chaplain (who has a duty to report if you're in physical danger) on something like this. I know what I'm talking about on this, I investigate serious/violent crimes within the military. Your story has a lot of holes in it, and the OTH isn't the only thing that won't smell right.

There were witnesses my entire squad. I was told "he was just giving me hell." I thank you for your response. There are records in my discharge about the problems and the reports. I'm not here to dispute my discharge. I'm just asking a question.
