The reason we're discussing it is because it would weigh on your chances of employment. It's not just the OTH, but WHY you got one that's important to a hiring agency.

Your conduct ( or response to what hapened) wasn't a mistake. You KNEW what you did was wrong and CHOSE to do it anyway. Everybody knows it is very illegal to go AWOL.
Your life since then is of little concern if you are looking for sympathy to make up for your OTH.
At best , you will start out with a significant handi-cap when applying. If they accept your app.

Thank you for explaining. I understand questioning but some statements are not phased as questions but as judgements. I personally try not to make a judgement until I have all the facts. I can provide them to a LEO agency if requested. Thank you again for all of the assistance. I will call my local agency to check with them. Everyone was so much help and I greatly appreciate your posting!
To clarify, I'm not judging you (you may be a decent guy who just exercised poor judgment that will cost you in being employed in LE), I'm just calling your story how I see it (i.e. it's not making sense and has holes in it because it's clearly not the whole story). You don't have to tell us the whole story here, and if you're uncomfortable sharing the full story with us then don't do it, but expect to be asked to do just that if you apply to a LE agency (and if you don't give the whole story to them, they'll have follow up questions, I assure you).
Either way, there's no harm in applying and letting the agency tell you themselves whether you make the cut or not. If that's your desire, apply and let the chips fall where they may... just be ready to tell the whole story upfront, without having to be asked further probing questions.

Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice.
My new hero!
I call complete and utter BS on this. There is NO WAY in this day and age that an Officer or NCO in the military could physically abuse you and get away with it.
As for your statement of no violence or any threats made, that has been made a moot point by your accusation that you tried to "fight back" but were "injured". I'd say that's violence by definition.
Make up your mind and tell one story only. Mainly, the best way is to tell the TRUTH, very little (or none) of which I've seen here in this thread.
So, having an OTH and a varying version of the truth, I'd say you have an absolute ZERO percent chance of getting into Law Enforcement.

Yeah, you better come up with a better story than that. The wouldn't have happened in 1964, much less 2001. The girl friend, yeah, but not being beat up by an NCO.

Thank you all for your help! Nothing but the best wishes for you all. I will continue to use this website. Its nice to have informed people to bounce questions off of!
I can absolutely guarantee that if you respond in a similar fashion when a background investigator (if your application ever gets to that stage - which is highly improbable) asks about your OTH you will have absolutely zero chance of ever progressing in the application process.
If you want to apply for a law enforcement job with an other than honorable discharge on your record you had better be prepared to be completely candid about the circumstances and you had better be prepared to answer lots and lots of questions about it.
Presently, your attitude regarding this is terrible. I would say you don't have the slightest chance of ever obtaining a job in law enforcement.
