    Question about a CI

My brother has a serve drug problem that had him in court ordered rehab for four months. After he was released he relapsed two months later and checked himself into a rehab center. Now less then two months after his (second) release he has admitted to using again, but claims to be working with the local police agency as a confidential informant. My question is in regards to the procedures of this; he goes to my parents asking for money for the deals, yet they never see the money again and he had my mom talk to the officer in charge of the man unit.

    1. Is it normal for the CI or parents to cover the cost of the buy?
    2. Would the Officer in charge talk to my mom?

I feel that I can answer my first question, but the second one threw me. My mom and I think that it was some type of ploy by my brother to legitimize his asking for the money.

If anyone has any information that can shed some light on this for us I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

No, we don't ask people to front money to make drug buys. Exactly the opposite normally- we provide the money so we can catch them later with that same money.

Would an officer in charge talk to your mother? Not sure really. If he's not a CI I guess they may tell you that. However, the idea is to protect the CI's identity so we don't really release the name of folks working for us.

Sounds like he is scamming you for money.

    He is scamming your mother.

As Legoate already said, the money used in undercover buy/bust operations is provided to the CI by the police. We don't send them home to ask their mommy for it.

Also, as a general rule, I won't talk to anyone about a CI working for me.

Agree with my colleagues; Mom won't know unless the CI is under 18, then she would have to okay it. He's scamming to get his drug money from your Mother. You or she needs to put a stop to it.

As an aside, tell your Mother she can expect him to steal it from her if she does cut him off.

The answers above do an excellent job of answering the questions, and going into further detail about procedures involving informants is not for general public consumption. I'm closing this thread to avoid follow-up questions that delve further into sensitive police tactics/procedures.
