    Injury before academy

With only weeks before going to academy I am injured a freaking out cause I cant run. I pull/tared the calf musles in my legs and now it spasms if I jog. Is it possible an employer will put someone in the next academy. Whent to physio and they said a months time i could be jogging lightly. Are academies physical right off the bat or do they do alot of studies first. I will be attendeing a corrections academy in Nevada, if anyone here has been in the las vegas corrections academy or similar could you please tell me what to expect for the first few weeks.

    Thanks

You might be SOL.....I woudl be contacting them today and see what they say. What were you doing that caused the injury?

First, before I answer your questions, let me reiterate that posting multiple threads asking the same question is considered poor ettiquette and is not permitted. Please post one (1) thread with a question, you'll get your answers (and we won't have to go around closing the others).

Your question is very confusingly written. Are you asking if the employer will put someone else in the next academy in your place, or would they still put you in even with your physical injury? If you're asking the former, that's entirely possible if you're injured to an extent you can't perform the physical fitness requirements. If you're asking the latter, if you're injured to an extent you can't perform physically then no.

I've been through 4 police academies, and 3 were physical on the very first day. Two even required passing the state minimum standards on the POST PT test, and if you couldn't pass it you were sent home.

Can't speak to this as I've never been a CO, or LEO in NV. As Joeyd already recommended, I'd get off the computer and start calling the agency and asking them directly. They may be able to still hire you and put you on light administrative duties until you heal up and are able to go to the next academy, but only they will know for sure if that's the case or not.

My academy started off with a BANG. You need to be 100% up front or you may injure yourself even worse and be tossed out. Better to make sure you are 100% healthy and can make it through than to take a great chance of hurting yourself needlessly.

If you had already been hired, we might push your hire date forward to the next academy, but it wouldn't be a slam dunk. Your chances would be better if you were female or a minority. It might depend on what you did to injure yourself too.

But as others keep saying, only the agency can give you a definitive answer.

1st - IDK what a "physio" is. Physiology is the study of the systems in the body, but isn't MD medicine. You need to see a doctor, preferably a sports medicine specialist or orthopedic surgeon to determine whether it is actually torn. For that, they'll need to do an MRI if it's not painfully (bad pun) obvious.

2nd - I never worked for LVMPD or CCDC, but I did work with then and knew Metro cops. I would be shocked and surprised if you weren't getting physical your very first hour of the academy. You are, after all, being put through peace officer certification, just a different category than patrol monkeys.

Day One was, by far, the most physically strenuous day in my academy. Day two was only a tiny bit easier, and that's only because I knew what they expected and as such given as many "motivational activities" for making mistakes.

You need to get in touch with the agency ASAP.

Thanks for the responses. I don't use forums too much, sorry about the multiple posts.
The injury was a combination of things. I did about 10 sets of seated calves raises starting with 3 45lbs plates going up to 7 plates then back down. Then I ran for 15mins, good solid run at 8.5 mph or so. Afterwards it felt like a good hard workout soreness. The next day it was a little hard to walk especially up stairs. I have felt that kind of soreness before. The day following the workout I played frisbee golf in the mountains so walking up hills was a bit painful but things felt normal. I then rested the legs for about 4 days and tried going for run, I normally run 3-5 times a week, and I got about two blocks before both calves went into spasm and it really hurt to walk. So I rested for two days and then tried a very light jog, got about four blocks and could feel the strain in my calves coming back so I stopped. I saw a doctor the next day, doc said I would be fine just stay off them for a few weeks. I went to a massage therapist the next day to help speed up the recovery time and he over stretched my left calf to the point where I was hobbling out at the end of the session. I then saw two doctors the next day. Got referred to a physiotherapist and referred for some ultra sound. The physiotherapist said there are micro tares in the medial gastrocnemius region of my calves and he predicted that in a months’ time I could be running.
The physical requirements for hire were pretty tamed, ie. 1.5 mile run needed to be under 17mins, so I was wondering what the academy will be like. If they have you run up a mountain in two feet of snow kind of thing, or if it’s all track running.
The other question I had was well.... am I screwed if I can't run by the academy date and is it unheard of for someone who injured themselves before going to academy to heal and enter the next one.
I am somewhat stuck between a rock and a hard place as I could be fine and dandy by the start of academy or I could be heading in and reinjuring myself which I 'm sure they would kick me out at that point How or do you tell your employer and how or do you contact the academy with something like this?
I am very stressed out as I quit my my job because I needed to relocate to attend the academy. God heal me.

    Thanks again for the responses.

You need to call whoever's sponsoring you (LMVPD?) and let them know what's going on. They will, in turn, tell you what they can/can't do for you.

Call them now and plan for the worse....otherwise you call a week out or show up the first day and you aren't better and they have no idea what is going or have been kept out of the loop for a month, and they just may kick you to the corner.
