OSP also does more criminal investigations than a highway patrol, but only in the more sparsely populated areas. If you're working uniform there, you're going to be going up and down the freeways like a bowling ball in a bowling lane for years. After you've been there for a while, you can go into game and fish or detectives, but most of your career is going to be traffic oriented.

We have a game commission and a separate fish and boat commission. The PA Game Commission has quite an extensive training program and is a pretty good job from what I understand. Don't know much about the Fish and Boat Commission. Neither are a division of PSP though, they are their own agencies.

Oregon has a separate boating regulatory commission. They're kind of a DMV for boats, do the licensing, etc. OSP, as I said has a game and fish division that's manned by troopers.

One of our guys came over from OSP game and fish. One night I was rousting a street hooker who showed me a fishing license as ID. I knew that wasn't her and got a hold of Jeff and asked him what the charge would be. In 1975, it was something like a $400 bail. Oregon is nasty about their game and fish laws. A rocket scientist on my department was caught spotlighting deer in E. Oregon. He was not only hit with a massive fine, but he and his buddy lost their rifles and he damn near lost his pickup. I think he also lost his hunting privileges for several years. It was bad enough that our department didn't bother to kick him any farther.

LOL I think it's that way here too, not to mention it is my understanding search and seizure doesn't apply to the Game Commission. They can tear your car apart for basically any reason they want...

NC Highway Patrol is a great institution but I never wanted to work there because 99% of the troopers work traffic and wrecks all day, everyday. Though NCHP does have some task force guys, it takes a LONG time to be on a task force.

I chose NC municipal law enforcement because I enjoyed answering the calls - though I got my fair share of wrecks and traffic stops, they weren't the bulk of my job.
