    Glock to smith M&P

Today as I drove through Duluth I notice a police officer on a bike with an M&P on his hip. I asked him if he had a free second, he said yes so we talked.

I told him I was thinking about getting a S&W M&P and asked him what he thought of it, he said he loved it. I asked him didn't your department have a Glock before, he said yes we had the glock 31 before we got these new M&Ps. I asked if it was still the 357 Sig and he said yes, the department loves the round so they stayed with it.

I asked him why did they switch to to S&W M&Ps, his answer was the department loves the safety features of the gun and they believe the S&W M&P is a better gun than glock ( I call to that).

I do know a few departments in the area that also have made the switch to S&W M&P, so the question is, is this a trend with a lot of other departments (dumping Glocks for M&Ps ).

Is the S&W M&Ps really a better gun than a Glocks?

I've carried both, Glock 22 at my old department, M&P at my current one. In addition, I owned a G27, and own a M&P compact.

Give me an M&P over a Glock any day of the week. The interchangeable backstraps on the M&P make it able to fit more hands. Its able to be set up to a left handed shooter in about 30 seconds using a ball point pen. Neither M&P I have owned/used has ever jammed or had a malfunction of any kind. Zero out of the two guns combined.

I will give the Glock credit, but the G22 jammed one time, which is one more than the M&P. I sold the G27 because it was the most uncomfortable gun I'd ever held.

    Ergonomics+ ambidextrous+ total relaibility = M&P for me please.

My first dept originally wouldn't permit us to carry the Glock because 'they' felt it wasn't a true double action. I went with the Sig 40 and couldn't have been happier. They finally authorized the Glock so I tried the Glock .45 but the grip was too big, couldn't quick draw it from a Scott holster and didnt care for the trigger squeeze. I stayed with the Sig. Switched depts where I stayed but had to carry a S&W. Hated it. I did have a 3914 for a while as an OD gun.

Again, that's like asking what make and model of vehicle do you prefer. I loved the Glock 21, I shot better with it than any firearm I ever owned, but I know a lot of people didn't care them.

There are those that swear by the 1911, but I didn't like them in the Army and still don't. I had a S&W 845 for a while and wasn't choked up about it either.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

It's all personal preference. I own 3 glocks and no sigs. Yet I carry a sig every day at work and love it. You may love a M&P, you may hate it. Who knows? Glock is the most popular gun in law enforcement, however I prefer a Sig over a Glock. So shoot them both, decide what you like best

We switched from the Glock 17 to the M&P 40 last year. We've had nothing but problems with the guns. Those officers who carry the compact version have been told to carry one less round in the magazine because the gun could possibly go out of battery due to what's being called a design defect. We've also had issues with magazines coming unseated, and premature rusting. Not to mention the triggers (I think ours are 10lb) absolutely suck. There is also a laundry list of agencies that have had serious problems with the M&P since it first came out. I believe even the LASD removed the gun from its approved weapons list because of all the problems.

I know that a lot of the problems with the gun over the past few years have supposedly been fixed, but I still don't like it. The Glock is a proven platform that doesn't have the issues. Before my next qualification date I'm going to go out and buy either a .40 Sig or H&K and turn in the M&P (I used to carry a 9mm Sig before the switch to .40). I just hate the thing. We've had a lot of officers do the same thing. Way more officers are carrying personally owned guns since we switched to the M&P than carried them when we had Glocks.

My gun has an amazing safety device. In fact, all my guns have it.

I am predicting when Norm reads this he will comment against S&W making semi-autos....just a guess.

You guys get rid of the pea shooters??? SAPOL got rid of them a few years back (also went for the M & P but I suspect that had more to do with a discounted rate due to their S & W relationship rather than any realistic difference between Glock and S&W). I didn't realise you guys had entered the 20th Century yet.

Its in progress. I am happy with the M&P, comes fitted with tac lite which is a nice step forward for us from the Model 10. Having said that, the M10 was "copper proof"!!

They wont let us have lights on our Glocks here....some idiot ruined it for everyone when he used it as a torch to write a ticket...the recipient of said ticket did not like having a gun pointed at them while the cop held it under his arm with his elbow and wrote the ticket out.

Don't you love avalanche supervision? One guy screws up one time and they change the rules for everybody. It's easier to screw the whole department than it is to just deal with the one moron. I used to really resent being treated like a first grader and that's exactly what they're doing. The entire class doesn't get to go outside for recess because one kid was chewing gum.
