    Blades

To my knowledge it is fully okay to, if kept in the sheath, carry around a sword with you if it is out in the open, like strapped to your back. Is this true? Also i am a bit of a blade enthusiast and i was wondering is there a way one can get a license to carry any sized blade they want hidden somewhere on there person?

Our concealed weapon permits only apply to firearms, I don't know about other states. I would check local ordinances before I walked around with a sword. I'm too lazy to look it up, but my city has some sort of ordinance against carrying a dangerous weapon around although there is no state law regarding having it in the open.

Sounds like it certainly could be a Prohibited Offenseive Weapon to me. If you wish to collect and admire edged wepaons , be my guest. However most states have laws against carrying them around and there is no permit to do so that I am aware of.

Why dont you ask your local PD what they think ?

There is no legal way to conceal a large blade in Missouri, either.

I also suppose that I fail to understand the purpose of carrying a sword around.

Karzon, first off, Welcome to RP from the Florida Panhandle. We usually ask our newest members to go to the New Member Introductions forum and post a thread introducing yourself and telling us a bit about you. Coming into our internet home and hammering away with questions is considered bad form here at RP.

As for your questions, you do realize that no matter what the law says, you usually have to justify the reason for carrying such a weapon to an officer who might stop you, right? And I guarantee you'd be stopped carrying a large sword around. Although in Florida I believe our concealed weapon permit allows for ANY concealed weapon. I'm not sure right now, I'll have to check.

Also, I don't believe you're asking this as information concerning writing a book or story, correct? So, I am moving this from the Ask-A-Cop:Writers' Questions to the regular Ask-A-Cop section.

    Knight Time

Karzon- Karzon is the sneaky Rogue Knight of the Snake, and a master of weapons and deadly traps. This cunning warrior knows every trick in the book.

You need to be very careful crossing the line from fantasy to reality. Once you try to carry this hidden sword on your back you will take it further until your fantasy is finished out in a jail.

My son has a nice collection of swords from medieval times and keeps them on display on the wall. I strongly suggest you keep yours' at home also.

Carrying a sword on your back as stated will only result in the never ending calls to police. Each state has different laws. They will find the adequate one for you.

Yep, this would be tantamount to putting a sign on your back saying, "Go ahead, Officer, stop and talk to me...if your insurance is paid up."

It is not legal in Connecticut. You would be arrested pretty quickly I would think.

I think it's only legal if you're this guy:

    OR this guy,

    OR possibly this guy,

In all seriousiness carrying a large edged weapon, whether concealed or not, is probably illegal in most states. Anything with a blade length over 4" in TN is illegal to carry and there are no permits to allow you to carry it. Even if it was legal, it would be extremely lame as far as swords or anything in "sheaths" go...unless you're in the process of field dressing an animal.

sorry i should have given more information in my question rather than leave it up to interpretation i am a rather out doors kinda guy and i also don't like going anywhere without a blade of at least moderate size, about 4 inches is the one i normally carry, and i love hunting knives and dont see why if someone can carry a gun with them it is such a bad thing if i want to carry a hunting knife on me at all times. I am not scared of anyone or looking to hurt anyone its simply (for lack of a better word) comfortable for me to carry blades on me

also my name is just one i created on a video game a long time ago i am not actually looking to carry around a sword i have only been told that legally if i was to keep it sheathed at all times i could in theory carry it around with me even though i would get a great deal of police attention

Many people carry some sort of pocket knife on them. If you're referring to the "Rambo" style knife or anything of comparable size, I would have some serious concerns about why you feel the need to carry a knife that large. Now if you're in the woods and intend to use such a knife for defensive purposes from an animal and/or to field dress it, that's one thing. Carrying it out on the street is another. Regardless of the intentions you tell us here on the internet, we only imply one thing when we find someone carrying a large knife on them in an urban environment, and it's not something in a positive light.

i have only been told that legally if i was to keep it sheathed at all times
By who? When was the last time you saw someone carrying sheathed sword down the street? I'm not aware of any jurisdictions that would allow someone to carry a sword or large bladed weapon around legally. How it's carried (i.e. sheathed) is of no consequence.

Small knife (blade 4" or less) = normally ok
Sword or large bladed knife = not ok

    Check your state laws.

Does it make you feel more comfortable or more macho?

Of all the things you could carry for personal protection, a knife is not one of the best choices contrary to what you see in the movies. To use a knife, you have to get close to the person and that can be dangerous. The fancy moves you use on video games don't work that well in the real world. Ever hear the term regarding bringing a knife to a gunfight? It's all true, believe me.

I'm not trying to be rude, just give you a bit of reality.
