    Question He's not a cop, but he plays one on TV...

    I'm talking about "Detective Robert Goren" of the NYPD's Major Case Squad.

    Here's my question. Recently his prop I.D. badge was photographed and shared online and seeing as how it's meant to look as authentic as possible to a real NYPD I.D. Badge and I was curious because I write fanfiction for this show, to know what the numbers and letters meant at the bottom.

    I was going to post the picture I have of it, but don't have that privilege yet, so I will just type up the information.

    DETECTIVE

    GOREN,
    ROBERT

    211-53-2589 DET. 02/13/92
    MCS TYP B RANK E3
    1 POLICE PZ 1108 Z-E310298
    ||||| ||||||||| |||| ||||| |||
    #897 87087 7#68/9# NYC

    My guesses/thoughts are:

    "DET." is the abbreviation of his current position. Although, why I don't know because under his picture and the NYPD logo it shows "DETECTIVE"
    02/13/92 is the date his character became a police officer?? (If that's right, would that be the date he entered the academy or the date he graduated??)
    MCS The division he's with: Major Case Squad
    1 POLICE PZ Where he's "stationed" out of

    Everything else I am not sure of. From going by the shows history He's had the titles "First grade detective" and "Junior Partner" are those possibly what the TYP B and E3 are indicative of? Also, I thought that the 211-53-2589 might be his SSN# because of the format but going back to check with what has been given as his SSN# in the shows history, it doesn't match, but it wouldn't be the first time a show has flubbed their history.

    What does it all mean?

    Thank You to anyone who can help me out with this. I would like to have the information in my stories be as accurate as possible with the show. So the I.D. badge gives a glimpse of some already known information and probably (hopefully) some unknown.

    Thank you, again for any help with this.

    Erica

    211-53-2589 DET. 02/13/92
    Looks like SS#, but who is dumb enough to put that on an ID.. Could be his employee number and they made it similar to a social security #..

    Det = Detective

    Date = Date Hired

    MCS TYP B RANK E3
    MCS = Major Case Squad?

    Type B = Type B blood (Not sure why they have this on an ID.. Most write it on their vest or wear dog tags, not their public identification..)

    Rank E3 = Is his rank scale.. Although it looks more like they took it from military than a PD..

    1 POLICE PZ 1108 Z-E310298
    1 = No clue (Could be station identifier #)

    Police = Self explanatory

    PZ = No clue

    1108 = No clue

    Z-E310298 = Could be similar to what California has for state tracking (P.O.S.T. training cert number)

    ||||| ||||||||| |||| ||||| |||
    Bar code = Correct on most proper ID's

    #897 87087 7#68/9# NYC
    No clue

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Don't kid yourself on the ID's.. Most agencies do not make their ID's that elaborate.

    Name Picture
    Employee # Date of Birth
    Rank

    Oops, when I put "1 POLICE PZ" and it being where he is stationed out of. I forgot to include that the Major Case Squad (at least on the show) is located inside One Police Plaza and on the 11th floor. If it would have just been 11, I would have just assumed it to be the location and floor number her worked, but the "08" throws me.

    As for his rank in scale and the military connection, his character was in the Army's Criminal Investigation Division "CID" (If that's even a real division), before he joined the NYPD. Would his rank transfer over like that being that they are different agencies?

    I wondered if maybe some of the information listed on the I.D. was just to snazzy it up and make it look good.

    Thank you so much for helping me out!

    1108 could be a room number on the 11th floor..

    Ranks do not carry over. However, I would not rule out that an agency modeled their pay scale after the military, especially since Law Enforcement is "quasi" - military organization..

    Most pay scales however are usually just based on their rank, and most have standard ranks..

    Officer/Deputy
    Senior Officer/Deputy
    Sergeant
    Lieutenant
    Etc.. Etc..

    Sorry to rain on your parade...BUT, it is nowhere near authentic and its meant to be that way for a reason. I'm sure you can figure out why?
