Never seen a photo radar system that displays the speed to the driver. Whenever I've seen a device that displays the speed, it's usually just one of those radar trailers that they put in neighborhoods (my department has a couple). Ours don't photographs or video tape, and no ticket is issued. It's just there to advise drivers of their speed.

And the beam is sent down the road, so if you were close to passing it, it probably wasn't picking you up, but rather a car down the road more directly in it's beam path.

Different set of rules in Australia. . . . but it's a civil infraction and only a fine is imposed. It's a lesser standard of proof and not a criminal offense. That's the way they get around it here.

Not in this country. We still have the legal concept of innocent until proven guilty. The evidence is weighed and a photo and radar reading is pretty damning, but there has never been any law that says the police are always right.

We have both unmanned red light and green/red light camera. The green/red also does speed. We had point to point cameras as well on the Hume Fwy, so it chcked your speed between the points, averaged it out and if you're over the 110kph, the fine is yours. We also have manned mobile speed cameras and all the operator (private company) has to do it say he set up as per the set up instructions. If YOU can prove it wasn't operated correctly then you can win, good luck with that.

We have legislation that says you (owner) must make appropriate enquiries as to who was driving your car if it wasn't you. If you're found guilty of that one @ Court = 2 years MIN. licence loss.

We, LEO's, have to same legislative support when it comes to our use of Laser/Radar. If we used it per the Regulations then its near impossible to win against us.

The right to to confront your accuser is an aspect of natural justice and we have it here, as they do in the UK, but as we all know, its a bit hard to confront a fixed unmanned camera!!!! The fines start @ $149 for less than 10 kph, $239 for 10-24 over and @ 25 kph over, licence loss (1 month) and close to $300. . . & they keep going up.

As you can imagine, it brings in lots of $$$ for the Govt. . . . yes, that's right, up to 5 mph over = $149 & at 6 mph over its $239. I have nothing further to add. :-D

Agree 100%. We have a speed trailer with radar and a message board that displays your speed. It is not used for enforcement but is used to let people know how fast they are doing and if we were doing speed enforcement there.....they could have gotten a ticket.

AND.......In 25 years , I have never met someone in court that had their speedo in their personal car calibrated and could prove it. Ours MUST be calibrated every 60 days by an outside agency.
