Open fire

If cops are driving around and the road gets blocked then somebody open fires on the car will the officers instantly shoot back?

zdog, first off, Welcome to RP from the Florida Panhandle. Usually we ask our newest members to go to the New Member Introductions forum and start a thread telling us a bit about themselves because coming in to our internet home and peppering us with questions is considered bad form. Also, we have a very comprehensive search function which you can use to check if your particular question has been asked and answered before.

As for answering your question above, I can really only say Seriously? What would you expect an armed officer to do, sit there and just get shot to death? Maybe you don't realize it but our duty is to protect the public so I would assume that someone shooting would be enough of a danger that an officer would fire back if he / she could safely do so.

I would wait until the person was done shooting, and then figure out the REASON they were shooting at me.

To me it's not the act the person is committing, but their state of mind at the time of the act.

Perhaps if I understand the cause, I could prevent them from shooting at me in the future.

(although this is how I would respond, my firearm sometimes responds in a different manner and I have a difficult time talking it out of firing back)

The police officer would not instantly just start firing his weapon not aimed anywhere. You said the road is blocked and "somebody" opens fire. Police training teaches us to acquire a target prior to blowing the neighborhood away.
