More specifically the caliber? I went on a ride along a few weeks ago and noticed the officer had an MP5 in his squad. Do most cops carry auto weapons with them?

So are you asking what we carry on our belt, or do most officers also have access to assault weapons?
We have M4s and shotguns in our vehicles.

The most IMPORTANT weapon an officer have with them is common sense. Being able to use your head and your abillity to talk to people will get you out of trouble and or prevent trouble many , many times over.
