Need help just bought car

Hi i just bought the car 3 days ago, i have the bill of sale / proof of insurance / and the registration papers that me and the previous owner signed, the issue is it has expired tags, do i have a certain amount of days that i can legally drive it until i can get current tags and the title changed over to me?

i need it to get to work and back

Usually if you are buying it from a private party, they will drive it to your house and when they leave, take the tags, making it undriveable until registered. If they can't, what I have heard is letting the person drive the car home and bring back the tags right away. Then you can't drive until you register it.

That's how it works in Florida. If you buy a car off someone, doesn't matter if the tags are good, they come off the car and you get your own by registering the vehicle as yours. It's a misdemeanor crime that you can either be arrested for or receive a criminal citation in lieu of arrest to attach tags to a vehicle that are not assigned to that vehicle AND that current owner.

In Oregon, if the tags are current, you could drive the car whether it's registered to you or not. It would be the same as if he loaned you the car. If the tags are expired, different story, you'd get a ticket no matter what. No one can drive a car with expired tags.

Get to the DMV, take a number, wait for an hour or two and get it registered, then you'll be fine.
