    party situation

If you are a college student majoring in criminal justice with a goal of law enforcement how would you handle this type of situation: You attend a college party where there are legal and underage drinkers and some pot smoking taking place but you arent participating in drinking or smoking just there to hang with your buddies. would you leave or stay?

    Okay.

What WOULD you do? We don't mind discussing it with you, but we aren't in the habbit of giving people the answer to Oral Board or other interview questions.

How about you tell us what YOU think first, and then we can have a discussion about it...

If you're not mature enough to use common sense and know what the "best action" would be, you may well be wasting your money on a CJ degree. Try Art History, artists can "wake and bake" and have no career repercussions.

How about this, for every situation you find yourself in, take a step back and ask yourself, "What would happen to me if the cops showed up right now?"

    Then govern your actions accordingly.

    See? It's not so hard.

    Alcohol is a drug.

And Samuel is right. You are OK with some laws being broken but not others?
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

I think this is a good question and one that every prospective new police officer asks him or herself. College is a tough place to be. It is hard not to be in the vicinity of drugs and alcohol, whether you are aware of its' presence or not. The bottom line is exactly what has been previously stated. If the cops come to break up the party or make a bust are you going to be drunk or high? If they tested you for either one would you pass? Are you aware of any dealing going on? Is there a great potential for the police to be called. You see where I am going. You can't hide in a room and wait to become a police officer you just need to stay away from the things that will prevent it.

Ahhh, clearly you're of the maturity level we look for!

Bull, drinking underage happens, I'll grant you that. What's the bigger issue here is YOU want to become a cop (right now) and are KNOWINGLY breaking the law by drinking underage and going to parties like you described above.

Did I, and other folks who are now cops, drink occasionally underage? Yes. Did I do so after I decided I wanted to become a cop, or otherwise knowingly continue to break the law? No. There's the difference, and why I posted what I did above.

You're not ready, not even close.

Kimble answered it perfectly. Many of us probably did drink underage, but we weren't thinking about being cops at 17/18/19 yrs old, let alone the consequences of our actions (like getting caught & arrested). I didn't decide to pursue criminal justice as an undergrad degree until I was of legal age (to drink). Once I decided I wanted to go that route, I did what I needed to do to not make it any harder on myself to get in that career field.
