Asheville & Weaverville Nc. Area Scanner Laws

I am a certified Skywarn Weather Spotter trained by the National Weather Service. I spot NOT chase bad weather and report back to the NWS visa Ham radio. Here in the Kansas City Missouri area our city have scanner laws, but Ham Radio Operators are exempt. My Question here is? Are there any laws concerning Police scanner in the Weaverville & Asheville area. I'm moving to Weaverville NC in March so I would like to know the local laws on this subject before moving and getting into trouble.

Not certain, but if ham radio operators are like any other group, they probably have an online presence complete with networking/forums that would give you more pertinant info.

We do, but none of the members are 100% shore, and some report that some towns have anti scanner laws. So I'm asking a cop.

I cant speak for NC but I am a ham ( N3_ _ _ ) and know that PA specifically exempts licensed hams from restrictions on having the ability to monitor emergency frequencies. A MARS adapted radio could actually transmit on our frequencies ( VHF) until we moved to UHF a couple of years ago.

If a person ( even a ham ) were to use a scanner/ amateur radio for criminal purposes , then there would be no exemption.

As a ex-Fire-fighter I know about criminal use of any radio would be breaking federal laws. But I would like to know the laws in the area that I'm about to move to. This way I can avoid getting in to trouble and if there is then I can plan ahead to arrange a meeting with the local police on getting a permit so that I can continue Skywarn Weather spotting With the equipment I already have in my Ford Escape.

I'm a "ham" as well and my suggestion would be to go to the local government websites for the areas you're concerned with and check for a link to city or county ordinances that cover this topic. Can't speak for NC or the areas you're going to live near, but here in Virginia most local governments have their county/city code available via the internet.

    Good luck and 73.
