Question regarding ride alongs...

Have any of you ever had a CJ student with you on a 'ride along'? (The reason I'm asking is because my daughter is studying to get a degree in Criminal Justice and one of her instructors said they can get extra credit by going on a ride along with local law enforcement.)

Yes! Actually in most classes I was in or others took, it was not extra credit, but mandatory. In my program we had to do 8 hours of ride alongs, 8 in a jail with a corrections officer and 8 in a local court room.

No worries mom, she will be in good hands and all efforts will be made to make sure she is safe. Somethimes to the point of "sit in the car."

8 hours? Mandatory? Wow! She'd love that! Maybe it will be a mandatory requirement later on. I know she's going to have to spend time at the courthouse, as well (but I think at this point it's just extra credit, as well).

And I'm not worried (okay, okay, I'm a mom, I worry a little) but I have confidence that our police department wouldn't put my daughter (or any other students) in any danger (but it's still nice to hear she'll be in good hands).

She's really excited about the ride along, though (and I'm excited for her).

I have BEEN the CJ student doing the ridealong ( Great Falls , Montana PD 1980) and I have had the CJ students ride with me. I had to ride 80 hours when I took that class and I only took it to do the ridealongs.

It can be a great learning experience and a fun way to earn some credits.
