    Filming of officers

To be clear, It's not something I do, care to do or am thinking of doing. I also realize something on the news doesn't characterize an entire group of people. This was partially discussed in another thread and was curious of your opinions.

Apart from someone being an idiot and standing in the middle/disrupting an officer directly is there any other issues that someone filming creates?

There's been a few stories, but one is the motorcycle rider in Maryland who was stopped and cited for 80 in a 65 and later arrested after posting a video on youtube. () was then arrested.

I'm guessing the stories told aren't complete, but it also may be more related to "bad apples" that make the news, rather than the thousands of officers who don't care.

I guess the last thought makes me think that maybe it's not really an issue at all and maybe just portrayed to even exist because of that. I however have heard similar stories, one being a kid filming his drunk friend getting arrested only to have his phone smashed by one of the cops. Entirely unsubstantiated by any evidence, but still makes one curious none the less.

If they don't interfere with my investigation, I couldn't care less if someone films me.

Most of the time, when someone is filming, they are also trying to agitate things. When they are under the impression that they have a "right" to stick the camera in the cop's face, or stand in front of the cop and block them until the cop answers a question, or other stuff like that, that's when the "Michael Moore-wannabe" goes to jail.

Agreed. I've yet to run into one that was only filming something they were involved in, that wasn't trying to instigate things further. I've had a few stand way back and film in our less than desirable areas hoping to catch me "abusing my authority" on traffic stops. Sorry, nothing to see here, just tickets and arrests, sorry to disappoint.

I don't like anyone in a detention having anything mechanical on their person. Officer safety issues. Don't care about someone filming, but I'll be damned someone sticks a potential weapon any where near me.

I understand completely someone not having anything while you're detaining them or having someone approach you during a stop. I was more referencing bystanders filming (assuming they actually stand out of the way and don't become involved) or an example being the youtube video posted where it was mounted to his helmet
