    the smoky bear

is it an option to wear the smoky bear cover while on duty, ive never seen a michigan state police with it, just a regular cover. Ohio Highway patrol on the other hand has the ol smoky bear. Why is it all state departments dont require it, the smoky looks bad ***, maybe its just something in the military. Also does the marine corps help out on becoming an officer? SEMPER FI

I read somewhere that the smokey bear campaign hat was voted the most authoritative cover used by law enforcement. Indeed it does look a bit more professional and "Drill Instructor" looking.
There is nothing like what I have become.

Hats vary by state and department. We wear the "Smokey Bear" otherwise known as the campaign hat. Fortunately my chief isn't big on hats and it only usually comes out when it is raining as it has a nice brim.

Any military background is good but the 'Corps always has a (good) stigma of being the toughest. Being the toughest isn't always what we need but it certainly is not a detriment.

rcsd has a ;policy to wear it any time the deputies are in front of puplic people. For example on a traffic stop they have to worry about getting it out and wearing it, kinda wierd when you should be concentrating ont the stop right?

I think it is hilarious when people will try to get out of a ticket because the officer wasn't wearing his/her hat.

That may have been a 1950's 1960's thing . Not any more.

i think all offiers should wear a cover, especially the smoky. I know sure as hell that if i was pulled over and saw a cop with no cover i wouldnt be as intimidated as an officer with the smoky on. Even a regular cover on an officer makes them look more professional and intimidating kind of like a DI. SEMPER FI

NYS troopers have the Stetson hats. They kick butt. When I took a trooper friend of mine to meet my parents, I made him wear his hat inside.

It is part of the regulations for our city officers to wear their hats when exiting the vehicle, as well as the troopers, but our towns don't enforce those rules.

I agree, most cops (troopers especially!!) look wicked tough when they have the hat on.

Our State troopers wear the Campaign covers all the time. The only time they do not have to wear them is indoors, on Bike patrol or SIRT actions. I do not think the State ENFORCES that they need to wear it, because I have seen them on stops without it.
