Could I realistically be in LE?

This is going to sound weird but I figure some input from actual LEOs would be helpful.

My personal career goal is to do investigative work, whether on the federal or local level. Being a detective/special agent really appeals to me because it's something I feel I would enjoy: the work sounds like the kind I could envision myself doing in the future.

But my issue is this. Physically, I'm not the "image" of an LEO. I'm not overweight or very thin, but I wouldn't consider myself "buff" or anything like that: I'm just in shape for my size. I go the gym and whatnot, but to be honest I've always felt that my size (and height) would make it almost silly to consider law enforcement as a career. This is honestly the reason why I consider federal agencies more seriously than local ones (LAPD in my case, I'm from California): I'm not sure I'm cut out for 2+ years on patrol, even though I find the job description exciting.

What do the LEOs have to say about this?

Some of the best cops I know are 5'0, 100 lb females.

Size isn't really all that important in this job. Having the appropriate mindset, keeping up on your tactics, staying in shape, going to the range regularly, and being able to relate to people are all WAY more important than size in Law Enforcement.

    Relax, you'll do just fine.

First thing you need is some self confidence. If you don't think you're cut out to be in LE, the bad guys won't either.

I've only been a cop a little over four years, but from what I've seen the most successful cops use their brain not their muscles (though sometimes you have to). If you can pass the physical requirements that is the main thing, don't let television Feds cloud your image of what a cop/fed is.

You're going to have to have it between the ears to do this job. There's so much more to it than just being in shape I don't even know where to start.

It doesn't matter how strong or fast or big you are there will always be somebody bigger, stronger, faster or luckier than you. Size and strength can't hold a candle to good tactics. Sometimes you have to go toe-to-toe with a bad guy and thats why they give you a belt full of really neat tools as well as backup. The majority of the time though use your head and you will keep yourself out of physical conflict. If you don't you will find yourself on the fast track to being hurt or dead.
