    Retired22 is concerned

I have a question. If someone lives with you a number of years, for example six years, and they have used your money due to their lack of money. Also they have strong signs of abusive manipulation; should the police be called when confronted to tell the person to leave your home?

Eviction of a person who has established a six year residency in a location is a "tad" bit more complicated than calling the police to get them to leave.

I'll save you some time and tell you what will happen when you call the police:

Officers will show up. Officers will tell you that this is a civil issue and that you will have to evict the person if you don't want them to live at the house. Officers will leave.

First, have you asked the person to leave? That might save a lot of trouble if they agree.

Second, each state has different laws regarding this. A lot depends on if you own the home, renting and the person is or isn't on the lease. But there is an eviction process if it's a place you own or they aren't on a rental lease. If they are on a rental lease, you may need to move to get away from them.

The bottom line is, you let this person move in and allowed them to stay for six years. You contributed too much to the situation for the police to give you an easy fix.

You are absolutely right mcsap, I appreciate that comment. It was my poor judgment all along. Too weak to take action. I have learned a good lesson, and I am surviving the situation well. In living with this person, I feel we will part in the spring after the winter snow, and it will be alright. But I am very discreet now, hold back talking to him, and am very calm. The main thing for me now is to stay calm, and cool about it. And just state the facts to him, when I tell him to leave. I can't afford him anymore, whether we get along or not. I am in no danger, but he does have an abusive and explosive temper. I used to fight back, now I don't cross him. Which has really ruined the relationship. I appreciate the other posters who have made comments; I came here with a problem, and got the answers I need. Thanks again folks for coming through for me, and taking your time to answer my questions. Good luck to all, and thank you for everything you do for us.

Bear in mind, if he gets physically abusive, don't hesitate to call the police. You did nothing to deserve that.

No, not in my house , but I don't know you. You would have to evict them anyway.
