    Detective Vehicle?

I apologize if this has been asked, I searched and didn't find it.

I was just wondering what detectives generally drive. What i mean is do they drive a car supplied by the department or do they drive their own vehicle? Or do they have an option? I read somewhere that one may have their vehicle approved and they will be reimbursed for gas during work hours.

I am not allowed to drive a personally owned vehicle at work under any circumstances.

Even if allowed, I would not risk a vehicle I own being driven in a Law Enforcement capacity.

Our guys drive Crown Victorias (for now).

Old former pool car CVs that are stripped down of all the lights/siren/cage. Or many actually have Impalas. All our CID guys fall under the take home vehicle program for their cars. Only a few patrol get to take their marked cars home. Helps keeps mileage under control, and increased morale.

Ours have to live within 8 miles from PD as the crow flies.

We drive "staff cars". We don't need big interceptor engines, etc. I drove everything from a Ford Taurus to a Dodge Shadow. They were a lot cheaper than the cars uniform drove to both buy and operate.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was, and now what I'm with isn't it. And what's "it" seems weird and scary to me. -Grampa Simpson

Totally depends on what they do and what they want in my dept. They drive Civics, Camrys, Chevy Pickups, Impalas, and even unmarked Crown Vics. Many of the actual undercover guys drive rentals so they can swap them frequently. Having one type of car doesn't really make a lot of sense.
A local agency gave all of their undercovers silver Nissan Sentras. It became kind of a running joke that whenever a Sentra would pull onto a block all of the bad guys would run because they assumed it was a car full of cops.

The cars assigned to drugs and vice are all over the board. A lot of them are vehicles we've seized. I used to like to drive this old beater brown Cadillac we had. It wasn't the coolest car we had, but I could go into just about any dirtbag neighborhood and no one would give me a second look.

We had the same problem with Cameros for a while. Most of the "U/C" feds here in the mid 80's drove them and a lot of our cops liked them so much that having a mustache and driving a Camero labeled you. Now having a shaved head, mustache and goatee pretty well does it.

Our detectives drive a wide variety of cars. Honestly I have no idea if the department bought such a wide array of cars, or if some were seized vehicles from criminals. Just at my substation (one out of four in the city), there are 2 Impalas, a Lumina, a Ford 500/Taurus, an unmarked Crown vic, a Dodge Stratus, and a Dodge Ram 2500.

We drive just about everything in my office. I have a Monte Carlo and we also have Explorers, TrailBlazers, Rangers, F150's, Bonnevilles, Mustangs, Altimas, Fusions, Harley's, Chrysler 300's, GMC Sierras, and a Town & Country Minivan. We buy used cars from auto auctions and also have a lot of seized vehicles. I am supposed to be getting issued a seized Yukon as soon as the forfeiture paperwork is signed. Not sure if I'll like it because it's all pimped out with 24" dubs.

We get the " Admin " police cars. I drive an 08 Impala but it is not the police package. It has the 3.5 V6 instead of the 3.9 V6 found in the police Impala. We used to get the hand me down marked cars but no more. All 3 of our Det cars are non-pursuit vehicles.

My car is the chiefs " old " car so it is pretty nice. It does have the police radio , full siren capability and hidden strobes. It also doesn't look like a police car.

Ah, i see. Aright thanks you guys, think i got the info i need. The general consensus seems to be that you drive unmarked department cars and seizures.
