What are the responsibilities of an officer while interacting with the disabled

I would like to know if there are protocols in place that encourage an officer of the law to be respectful or courteous during a traffic stop. I would like to know if there is a protocol in place when it comes to dealing with the disabled. In Oregon we have the elderly persons and persons with disabilities abuse prevention act. I have read over the pamphlet and it talks about how someone that is disabled can receive a protection order to prevent further abuse. It also states that someone can ask for this order on the behalf of their disabled family member. ORS 124.005(1)(V) states that "using derogatory or inappropriate names, phrases, or profanity, ridicule, harassment, coercion, threats, cursing, intimidation, or inappropriate sexual comments or conduct of such nature as to threaten significant physical or emotional harm to the elderly person or person with a disability".
I have asked the department in the city where I live but they have stated that I would receive a call from a Lt. in regards to my questions. I have decided to ask here in this forum as it has been over a week and the Lt. has not been able to find the time in his busy schedule. So if any of you are aware of police interaction with the disabled are handled I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Oregon doesn't have protection orders, they have restraining and they only apply to people you have lived with.

    Who wrote that pamphlet?

It has been my experience that many people mistake professionalism for rudeness.

    What's the back story???

I do my job professionally. How I act or what I do/say depends on the situation/actions of the persons involved, etc. There is Nothing that requires me to be nice, polite, courteous, etc to Everyone or at All times...

Just because someone is older or disabled or in a wheelchair, etc does Not mean that person is a decent person or not a threat.

We are to be generally couteous and respectful of the public but we are not doormats either.

My policy is to be as nice as I can , as long as I can , as often as I can ....but sometimes I am not due to the circumstances.

I have know many with disabilities and many elderly who were complete a**H***s on stops. While I am supposed to be nice, you are supposed to be civil. Once you change the game, don't be surprised when the cop does. You get what you ask for. And if you are so disabled or elderly you make several traffic infractions or a safety issue, remember driving is a privilege and not a right.

Why don't you share what happened.

One agency I worked for required us to obtain Social Security numbers on our violators, man many stops sure went south after I asked that question.
We were also required to ask for their next of kin info. Many violators asked "why, are you getting ready to shoot me"?
Personally, I would try to follow the seven step violator approach. If the actor felt the need for name calling and insults I tried hard not to stoop, but this wasn't always the case.

Elderly abuse laws do not refer to an officer's attitude on a traffic stop. Your posts are completely one-sided, without giving any inclination of the scenario that brought about the post in the first place, which tells me that we are definitely only getting one side of the story. With a screen name of homicidal1, you're not going to gain friends quickly here. This is the second post where you are implying that officers are treating you (or someone close to you) wrong in some sort of fashion. Keep in mind (as I reminded you on the other thread you started) that this a pro-police site and we don't take kindly to people here posting one-sided stories with one-sided opinions on an officer's conduct, actions, or behavior without knowing the full truth. I will tell you, as I'm sure the others can, that some of the most verbally abusive people we have come across on traffic stops (and other LEO interactions) have involved senior and/or disabled persons. It's rare, but it happens. We are normally nice a good majority of the time until it's time not to be nice.

If Im reading into it right, Im thinking that the poster is asking if an elderly person can get a restraining order against the police because an officer was rude to them.

    No, they can't.

As I said, Oregon doesn't have protection orders, only restraining and stalking. And restraining orders only apply to people you've shared a residence with. I have no idea where this idea came from.

I had a guy with a colostomy bag walk towards me at a DV job the other day. I could see the bulge under his shirt and asked quite forcefully what it was and he snapped back that it was a bag and made someother sarcastic comments giving the impression he thought I was being rude. I quite quickly explained in no uncertain terms that a lum to me is a weapon and I couldn't care less if he was wearing women's underwear and signing show tunes, as long he was no threat to me.

He continued to be an a$$hat during the incident and at one point I politely asked him to sit down. He gave me a look of defiance and I very quickly assured him that he gets asked, then he gets told, then he gets made. He did what I asked him.

He then made a comment that he did not like the way I spoke to him in his house. I explained that the minute I showed up, with legal powers to enter and investigate the allegations of DV, it was my house and he could leave anytime he liked...however a few things depended on how he left the house. He complied from there in.
