Report Immigration Marriage Fraud

Good evening everybody. As a future law enforcement career seeker, I find myself in a tough situation. My friend currently an illegal immigrant, recently married an American citizen. There is no love in this relationship, it is strictly business; He pays her and she helps him get a green card. I come here so that someone can hopefully point me in the right direction, as I find myself unsure whether I should report this fraud to ICE. It is a fraud and by no means do I support it, on the other hand the guy is my friend.

I guess at this point one should ask you if you become a cop, what other federal criminal offenses are you going to pick and choose to enforce (or refrain to report as required by law)?

There is actually a marriage fraud unit within ICE. They are civilian (not law enforcement). We just hired a guy who used to do that. They get calls all the time and are always looking for work.

It get's investigated if it's deemed to be a credible complaint with valid leads, and if criminal activity is found, it gets referred to federal prosecutors who decide on whether to press felony (yes, this is a federal FELONY offense) charges.

If this isn't something you feel comfortable doing, you really have no place being a law enforcement officer, as we don't have the legal option to pick which laws we enforce and which we turn a blind eye to. You either enforce the law or don't.

Absolutely without a doubt, our daughter is going to be 3 in december. On the other hand I know there is no love involved in my friends marriage. Besides it's pretty obvious, shes 12 years older than him, shes white, and he's hispanic. Plus she has 3 kids underage kids, and he has none, and they don't even live together. Hell, the guy is even using a relative as a sponsor because she doesn't work!!! So I mean it's completely obvious that the marriage is strictly business. So, by your thinking, if you commit an armed robbery of a bank, you should be fully prosecuted if you didn't need the money and were doing it for kicks? As opposed to committing the same robbery but being unemployed and needing to feed your family - then it would be ok??

So, toughlife, the gist of your personal credo seems to be that, 'Illegal immigration is wrong, unless it personally impacts my lifestyle.' Is that it in a nutshell?

On a related note, what happens when the guy gets upset that you upset his 'arrangement', and decides to turn around and report Gabriela to ICE?

Well the way I see it Gabriela has violated the law by entering without inspection and is violating by remaining here unlawfully, but she is commiting no fraud. Our marriage would be based on love and not business. On the other hand this guy, is making a fool of the government. He's already thinking about getting welfare when he gets conditional residence. Gabriela's absence would not primarily hurt me, it would hurt our daughter who has a medical condition. Hell I can find another woman and that's it, but my daughter can't find another mom.

Lol - all that response without answering the questions I (or Samuel) asked. Her crimes can be overlooked because there's no fraud, and there's extenuating medical circumstances involving the daughter, right?

Simple and straight forward response. I have to admit you've made me feel like nothing, but then again that can change if I start reporting illegal activities. The question is, would ICE even deem my tip credible? I mean I can imagine there have been many instances where people report what they think is a fraud, but infact is legit. I would really get pissed off if I reported this, and the guy was still issued the green card.
