Morgan Earp.

Listed on the history of U.S. Marshals for the shooting in Tombstone in 1881. Assassinated for that involvement.

But he's not listed on ODMP or the Marshal's List of Honor.

Just curious if anyone knows the answer. (Obviously not a real pressing question)

Morgan was killed a few months after OK Corral in an ambush March 18, 1882. As far as I can tell he was still Deputy Marshal and guarding Virgil while he recovered. The second link to Wikipedia gives the assassination details.

I don't believe any member here works for Officer Down Memorial Page, so we can't speak for why they do or don't have something on their page. Their website has a submission area to nominate officers killed in the line of duty, why not send Earp's info off and let them decide whether to include it: Submitting an Officer

Good idea. I sent to ODMP researcher as I don't think I have enough info to actually submit. I suspect the USMS would have to sponsor his inclusion at some point if it's deserving? I don't know how that works. He's not on the USMS List of Honor either so I was hoping a USMS history buff might know why.

I believe it's because he was not actually "on duty" at the time, although we all know that back then they were on call 24-7. And he wasn't killed so much for the office he held, as for his name.

He was a deputy city marshal, not a US.

It's not exactly clear. Virgil was Deputy U.S. Marshal and held city marshal job at same time (apparently that was okay at the time). At some point, both Wyatt and Morgan were deputized as U.S. Marshals but I have no idea when or how long they held the posts. Wiki says that Morgan was Deputy U.S. Marshal when he was assassinated but that information is not verifiable. U.S. Marshals site lists the gunfght as part of their history. The posse that hunted down and killed Morgan's assassins was apparently a federal posse but that's not clear either. Morgan's tombstone says U.S. marshal and that's apparently what he considered himself to be. It's a stumper for me.

Morgan was never sworn in as a deputy US Marshal. Wyatt was in the Arizona Terrority.

RDS is correct, in that Virgil swore him in as a deputy marshal for Tombstone.

Morgan was not in such position when he was ambushed and murdered.

Virgil was wounded twice, once during the OK Corral and a more serious crippling ambush in December '81 outside of the Oriental.

Morgan was also wounded during the OK Corral, but was murdered in March of '82 after being ambushed.

The youngest brother, Warren, was murdered in Wilcox, AZ, a few years later.

Wyatt is the only one that went unscathed.

The oldest brother, James, was crippled after being wounded in the Civil War and never got into the law enforcement game. There is over looked evidence that issues with one of James teenaged daughters messing with Tom McLaury, who was hooked up with the Clantons, was the first conflict with the Earps and was a seed of brewing contempt.

I can't find where that service ended. I did read that Wyatt and Virgil resigned at some point.

During early 1882, Morgan was appointed to the federal position of Deputy U.S. Marshal, an office subservient to Wyatt Earp, who had been given the position by the U.S. Marshal C. Dake, after Virgil was wounded, and had authority to deputize.

Like you said, Morgan was killed in March that year. His Tombstone says U.S. Marshal, not that it means anything.
