New Car not designed to have a windsheild in Michigan...where it is a requirment.

Hey guys this is my first post here. I have purchased a rather unique car that is obviously a dune buggy. This is not built for the dunes nor do I have any intention whatsoever of getting it dirty. This is more of just a summer car when the weather is appropriate. It was built in Kansas and has been titled , vinned, and inspected by the Kansas state troopers deeming it street legal in the state. In a couple weeks I will have this shipped to my doorstep and stored up for the winter and ready to go in the spring. I am concerned however when registering this in Michigan getting the form TR-54 completed. This is due to the section requiring a windshield and wipers. This car is not designed to see the rain, mud, or any inclement weather and is more of a show/street buggy to get me around town now and then. If I absolutely must do so I am going to butcher it up to slap in a sheild and wipers only to pass this requirement. Are there any exceptions to this rule? such as wearing safety glasses, and even a helmet if necessary? Besides the use of airbags this vehicle is probably much more safe than most of the junk out on the road. I would love to include the link to the builder where you can view this vehicle, but being my first post this is not allowed here, If you would like me to provide the link just tell me where I should email it to. Bottom line, what do I need to get through form TR-54 in Michigan without doing a horrible disservice to this car? Also I tickets of any form are not an option, I have a great career and a condition of employment is to hold a CDL which I will not jeopardize.

Thank you in advance and stay safe out there!

I would love for you guys to see the ride to know what I am dealing with. It was built by "the buggy shop" and my car is "under pressure"

Have you checked with Michigan DMV? I know nothing about that state, but some do have exceptions for some cars. Oregon passed a law allowing some "hot rod" customs get away with less than adequate fenders, but until that a lot of people got tickets for it.

If it's a requirement that ALL cars have a windshield, you'll probably get a ticket at some point if you don't have one. You can't depend on every cop that stops you understanding about your car.

I believe Kansas requires windshield wipers..........

    Statutes
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

I,ll suspect that if you claimed you would only drive during the day that you really wouldn't need headlights ?

State equipment regulations ( at least in PA) apply to ANY car driven on a public highway. The only exceptions that we have are for antiques that were built without certain items and they can't be out after dark.

Last time I checked , you could be out on a sunny day and a storm could roll through. Now what are you going to do ?

Kansas does require use of windsheild wipers, in cases where cars do have a sheild installed. This particular design of car, does not require a sheild in that location.

mcsap, I am not attempting to start a debate here and to answer your first questions, no I would not claim I do not need head lights. As far as what I am going to do if it storms? .........more than likely the same thing any other person would do while driving a motorcycle..........

I was simply looking for input if there were execptions to the rules based on having a vehicle that has already been vinned, titled, inspected by the state troopers, and insured in a different state while transfering to Michigan.

    Thanks

Likely that Michigan's DMV will have more complete info on registration and windshield/wiper requirements than we will. It is their rules after all, not the police's rules...

Having a VIN and a title and an inspection in one state does not obligate ANY other state to acept or adhere to their rules. Your " car" would fail state inspectin here.

Why dont you just call Michigan State Inspection Station ( who would know the answer to your question) and ask them ??

I googled the key words and looked at the pictures. Driving that on the street in my state would get you a fist full of tickets and probably a tow away, depending on what year it is VIN'd as. If it's listed as a 2010 model year vehicle, you'd never be able to make it legal. Much like a 4-wheel ATV vs a motorcycle, that is an off-road vehicle and should be kept as such.

We're not here to help you find exceptions to laws you'd rather not obey. Cops don't do that.

That's actually kind of funny. There are pos rails that are not safe at all in my book screaming around Michigan, not to mention lately a pile of RZRs, Rhinos. and golf carts. No worries, I will be contacting the local guys on Monday to get something lined up for inspection the week after it arrives here. I will let you guys know how it goes.

It's not "your" book that counts, it's the State of Michigan's book.

The thing that's really kind of funny, is that you asked a question and when given honest answers to the best of our knowledge, you point your finger at other people who are driving things that probably aren't legal either.

"WAAAH! You can't give me a ticket, because that other guy was driving a vehicle that's worse than mine!"

When you get stopped, the only thing that will matter at that time is that YOUR vehicle isn't legal. The officer writing your tickets isn't going to want to hear about what you saw someone else driving last week... least not until he's done with you.

Wow, I joined this site looking for possible input from you guys that may have done an inspection before. The reason being was to get the car up to standards if need be. I could care less what other people are driving but the fact is they more more than likely passed an inspection to get it platted. I am looking to comply with standards to AVOID tickets. I hold a CDL with a pile of endorsments as a condition of employment and I am not looking to gamble on violations. Thanks for nothing other than condesending responses.

mcsap: I appreciate the link to inspection centers in Michigan, that was more help than the rest of these responses combined.

Who are you talking to? The only only response that could even be classified as "edgy" was Curts, and even then, it was not at all out of line.

We are off duty here, and not getting paid to answer your or any one else's questions. If you can't take the little bit of gristle with the steak that we provide here, then I suggest you try another website or ask an on duty officer.

Out here in AZ, police don't do the inspections, MVD does. I guess that differs from state to state, but even cars with license plates don't deem everything attached to the car "legal." You've already been given a website which your Google-fu could have come up with had you taken an extra 2 minutes to look for it. Good luck to you.

Nice!!!!!! I was holding a plate full of eggs, bacon and hash browns earlier. After all that grease, I hope I don't find any violations in my drawers.

    Whaaaaaaaaaat? Don't be hatin'!
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.
