It doesn't sound like much to me. I wouldn't worry about it.

Is it against the law to carry a pocket knife "wherever you are?"

This happened in NYC
The knife I had was a spring assisted knife. However, according to NYS laws, it "can" be called a gravity knife (which is illegal) due to the vague writing of the law.
Im worried that my name got called in with the officer saying "possession of a gravity knife," and that this incident will be on a computer somewhere and will somehow be available for my investigator to see and question me about. Could this happen?
My $.02:
If they said over the air that you were in possession of a gravity knife, then there would be a lot of questions to answer about why they didn't make the arrest. I would bet that they checked you for warrants, gave you the knife back (another sign they were not worried about it) and sent you on your way.
I see no harm in telling your investigator if you are worried about it, but I agree that this will not be a hamper.
I do wonder why they stopped you just for carrying a pocket knife (they could not know that it was an assisted opener just from the clip) if it's not illegal to do...

MO. is a firearm open carry state, so that would take some getting use to if I was to go to NY and work.

Me: Is this your wallet? Her: yes.
Me: Is this your change purse? Her: yes.
Me: Is this your blue cloth bag? Her: yes.
Me: Is this your Meth? Her: NO.
Pesky purse elves hiding Meth in her purse?
If you KNOW or even THINK that it could be a violation to carry this knife and you are an applicant to the PD....WHY in the world did you carry it ?
Are you willing to risk getting your app shredded over a pocket knife ??

This thread shows a lot about your level of maturity and lack of common sense.
You realize that carrying this knife may be illegal for a number of reasons, and yet you do it anyway. Then not only do you carry it, but you expose it so anyone can see it.
Get a clue and grow up a little if you wish to be a police officer. Your behavior needs to be sterling while you are in the process- in other words- No police contact, no idiotic behavior.
I'm my department your application would be trashed once your BI found out that you knowingly violated the law while in the process of applying to the department.
You'd better let your BI know, if he finds out some other way without you telling him you are done for sure.

Take it from me, you have nothing to worry about. Did you give them a driver's license for ID.? If so, they probably did a name check, if they checked it at all. The fact the partner walked away, out of your view is a hint. You satisfied their curiosity, checked out ok...nothing more, Resume Patrol. Good Luck to you.
PS...Keep the knife inside your pocket for now.
I agree with this ^
its also an eye opener for me. I'd like to goto NYC one day on vacation and even if I don't being my pistol i never go anywhere with out a knife. I'd probably get myself in trouble if they told me they stopped me because they saw the clip on my pocket.
Wrong door, buddy
So how do you eat in restaurants in New York City without knives?

Yeah, I have one of these little knives with
a clip. But mine is thumb assist.
And the clip thingy sticks out of my jeans pocket
on my day off.
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL
