    Question Asthma

I am going to school to get an associates in criminal justice and work in the air force as a mechanic. i was recently diagnosed with exercise induced asthma. i only use my albuterol inhaler about once a day when i go running or if something triggers it like a strong perfume. will this keep me from becoming a LEO?

    It depends on the department.

To a thread search for asthma...I have made a thread in the past which deals with this issue. I have asthma myself. I am not yet a cop.

Wreckageelite, If you can pass the physical tests, it can't prevent you from being a cop.

Try to wean yourself off the inhaler if you can.

Why? If you need the inhaler you need the inhaler. He needs to follow his doctor's orders. There are pills he can take that can help but he should always keep his inhaler with him no matter what. Do you tell a diabetic to ween himself off insulin?

OTOH, if you don't "need" it, you don't "need" it. I agree that having the inhaler around is a good idea just in case. Exercise induced asthma and diabetes is apples and oranges. And yes, wrto weaning yourself off an albuterol inhaler, I've BTDT.

A lot of cops around here carry their inhalers, contact saline solution, etc.
They have big purses in the trunk or passenger seat of their patrol cars (they call them "duffel bags" -- they're purses :D )

I have known other cops with both asthma and diabetes. As long as you can perform the job functions you should have no problem.

I have exercise induced asthma and it was not a problem for me. My asthma is not as severe as it was when I was a teenager either. Unless you can not pass the physical agility tests, I would not worry about it.

if they will let you in the military with your asthma you shouldn't have to worry about it with being a cop, its that plain and simple.

speaking of which, does your recruiter know you have been diagnosed with it?

samuel, you had way to many accronyms but that is ok. What is OTOH and BTDT? ngcsubutterbar, I wasn't diagnosed with asthma until after I was in the military. it doesn't bother me unless it is really hot or really cold outside. I keep several in different places that I go regularly. I have one at work, in my house, my gym bag, my locker at the gym. better safe than sorry.
