It varies from agency to agency. Decide where you want to work and see what their requirments are. I would take it one step at a time though. Get hired, learn how to be a cop, show them you can be SWAT.

All SWAT members in my county are all regular patrol officers who are specially trained in tactics and weaponry. In order to join SWAT, you must first "pay your dues" as a patrol officer, be in good physical shape and be extremely proficient in shooting etc., have a good reputation with co-workers, and a good history with the department.

    Stump nailed it.

We do not hire SWAT officers. You have to start at the bottom and work up.

Here, you need a min. of 5 yrs. as a cop, show a good work ethic, and be ready to set your personal life completely aside for work as you are subject to call out ALL the time. Only 2 can refuse on any callout, so being a new guy you are going to be stuck going to every one for several years.

Last year they took 1...........34 tested.

    Swat

    Kid,

Crawl before you walk, walk before you run, run before you fly... You are certainly putting the cart in front of the horse. Do you even know what being SWAT means?

I am sure that the movies and television shows that you have watched make SWAT out to be very cool, shooting and blowing things up etc., but, that is not reality.

I will tell how to be a good SWAT operator. BE A GOOD COP FIRST. You really need to focus on your' goal of being law enforcement. After you have been on the job for more than a year, if you still want to aspire to SWAT, then you can start focusing on that goal. There are certainly no guarantees that you will make it that far.

I agree with SWAT1......prove yourself as a COP first, then decide if you want to be a SWAT COP.
The only advice I can further provide you is to shop for Departments that offer a SWAT team. Some offer SWAT, ERT, ESU, WST,NEST, RAT...whatever...just choose a deparment that offers what you want. Find out what Department Policiies determine the "activation" of each team!

SWAT may seem glamorous and all that crap but it is a ton of blood, sweat and tears....hundreds and thousands of hours of training...for the big one..that never go as planned! Be strong, physically, mentally and dedicate yourself to a Department...prove yourselfy and make yourself Swat worthy..it will come!

Good advice. I'm sure the movie SWAT has made a lot of guys think it would be cool to be on a team without giving a thought to the work and time that is involved with getting and staying on one. Whenever we call out one, I notice that the guys just look tired more than anything. I watched them practicing entries one day at the local PD range and they just flat looked whipped by the end. We're just lucky that there are guys who want to do it.

Nothing beats a full day of entry training with 40+ pounds of gear. Then sprinkle in some stress course on the range (they incorporate physical fitness tasks and time restraints to induce high pulse rates and stress) and you'll have no problem sleeping that night! LOL

You know they stay busy in Miami when you ask them how many times they have already been called out before they got to us and they have to stop and think. :D

Our Countywide SERT team trains a lot. And it isn't easy. Forget all of the "glory" of the TV SWAT teams. They don't show you the many, many hours of practice and training. I enjoyed my 4 yrs on the team and am happy to let others " bask" in the glow of a hard days training !

Oh yes and most important! When you finally get home and say hello to the family, you hear a beeping noise from your pocket. You pull out the old pager to to read "Full SWAT Call OUT, Barricaded suspect with multiple family hostages..suspect reported having numerous long range weapons and threatened to kill anybody Cops in sight. More information to follow, meet SWAT truck at 5th and Bush.....drive safe"

Then you realize that SWAT is not glamorous, it is not enjoyable...its hard, stressfull work. The only enjoyment of SWAT seeing the surprised look on the faces as "YOU COME BARRELING THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR WITH UMP 45'S, SWEET 16'S, P 90'S, AND SHOTGUN FOR DISTRACTION". The downfall to that is finding your enemy on the other end of the door waiting....!

    Gotta go...pager is calling!
