Hey guys, I'm an amateur writer of urban fantasy, but I find my fictional police officers aren't nearly as organized or competent as actual cops. I have a lot of really peculiar situations the protagonists find themselves in that aren't exactly covered by local laws.
My latest project involves a secret society of magical people in Seattle, Washington, and at the start of the story about fifty of them got stuck in another dimension. Naturally, within a couple days the police are flooded with missing persons reports that all appear to be indirectly linked. It's not that everyone knew everyone else, but A's wife tells the cops that A had poker nights with B and C, who worked with D and E, and E, F and G frequented the same bar, etc. How would the police deal with a situation like this? Would the FBI get involved? How could the district attorney (also magical, but malevolent) obfuscate an investigation?
Related question: how would the cops handle an attempted arson that's obviously fake (molotov cocktails mostly filled with water)? What would they ask the bar's employees?
I'm probably going to come back to this forum a lot, since I've got many, many weird scenarios like this. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!
